Faulty goods

We bought a LG 42" TV Nov 08 for £563 from Dixons which after just over 2 years has developed a fault with the picture.
As we did not take out extended warranty i contacted Dixons about the TV stating that i expected a TV of that price to last longer than 2 yrs, i also did a quick search on-line and found out that this is a well known fault. Dixons wanted £60 to look at it which i reluctantly agreed to pay and they picked it up last week.
They have called today and said that it has failed on a 'premature fault' and that they cannot get parts for it now so have offered me initially £300 plus my £60 back as it was a manufacturing fault.
I explained that i wasn't happy with this as a replacement would cost more to replace, they put me on hold and then came back with an increased offer of £340 + £60).
They say that this takes into account that we have had the TV for 26 months so hence the reduced offer.
I feel that as it was a manufacturing fault i should be entitled to a full refund or am i being unreasonable?
Done a quick check on consumer rights but difficult to find a correct answer.

Hi Mick, I'm sorry to hear about the TV.
However I think dixons are being very generous, an offer of £340 for a 26 month old tv worth £563 isnt too bad, you basically payed £223 for 26 months worth of tv.
Now if I asked you if you'd pay £223 for a tv for 2 years you'd probably jump at the chance
The reason you don't get a full refund is because you have had 26 months worth of enjoyment and for them to give you a full refund would seem silly considering you had all that full and happy use of the tv.
Take the offer and run it is VERY good
Like I say you've basically had a quality TV for less than £10 a month0 -

Thanks for the quick replies and the link to the refund assessment.
Don't want to be unreasonable but we expected to get better life and value out of a TV which cost £560 and we are disappointed that it has failed on a common well known fault.
I am going to look for a similar standard TV and price up how much it will cost to replace, prices have reduced, even over the last 2 yrs.

This is one of those "pick your battles" moments. You could spend all your time fighting this, dragging it out, spending hours on end writing letters etc, filing out court forms blah blah blah, with the possibility of getting another £50 out of them, or losing it all.
Look at the positives, take the decent offer, get yourself a new TV, and use the time you would have spent in an infuriating and ultimately meaningless battle telling your friends not to buy from the same people you didOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -
I must say Dixons have been very good with you. Essentially what the've done is instead of getting you to arrange your own independent report done under SoGA they've done all the legwork and since the've found it to be a manufacturing fault the've refunded the £60 inspection charge, and as the TV needs a remedy and as to repair would put disproportional costs on them the've offered a partial refund. And the partial refund ALMOST coveres a brand new LG 42" 1080p LG 42" LD450Look at the positives, take the decent offer, get yourself a new TV, and use the time you would have spent in an infuriating and ultimately meaningless battle telling your friends not to buy from the same people you did
Sorry I have to disagree with you completely, Dixon's did the report, found to be faulty at time of purchase, refunded inspection charge and offered £340 back which is more than a 42" will cost and about £20 less than a Full HD 42" LG WITH a brand new warranty. If I was OP I would buy from them again, I mean sure you paid £60 upfront but you would of paid that at least if you pursued under SoGA and they did it within a week/just over.0 -
I was being somewhat tongue in cheek. The OP is clearly unhappy with the service, whether right or wrong, and from experience I know that a dissatisfied customer will not go back to that company. I was just suggesting that a battle for a better deal will be fruitless.
