Yes its a tragedy of epic proportions but viewng the Techie MSE angle on it --->

Are we expecting to see the cost of LCD TVs, laptops, computer components and other 'stuff' rocket within weeks? or creep up over a few months?

Even things assembled outside japan are probably reliant on components (chips) and other supplies that are no longer flowing out of there.

Not even sure if Japan'ss factories / industrial heartlands are concentrated in the south, north, or evenly spread out.

Anyone?

I'm take the uninformed position they tend to make cheap/shoddy stuff whereas the Japanese tended to go for the higher end of the market.....

hence prices of ebay tat should remain largely unaffected.

The problem is that after ANY Magnitude +6.5 chip prices rise dramatically...

Anything over 6.5 causes clean rooms to be contaminated by dust so they have to be shut down for up to 4 weeks to decontaminate and fully clean the areas...

That means 4 weeks of no production in an industry that's run on a "Just in time" format...

The weird thing is, after all the bad news the Yen rocketed in value.
  • That was because the BoJ plunged more yen to the tune of trillions into the market thus sinking there already fragile economy into more debt

And the G7 are trying to correct the "effect of speculators" any one want to buy 2Trillion of yen futures , at +0.001 points. No ok how about 1Billion then at .0015. Credit crunch time again, been here before, the markets have a realistic view of this, sell banks and tech stocks and nuclear/energy. I really want to know who are the creditors are for the UK/US losses sure aint me.

Remember the old BoE promise on the pound notes(sorry youngsters we had pound notes once, and silver threepenny bits and silver coins, we still have gold sovereigns but you cant buy 1 for £1 sterling), I promise the bearer the sum of one pound .... one pound of what.
