Oh, and its for Barclays BANK not Barclaycard.
  • Hi,

I've just signed up to the forum to reply to this thread having found it by Googling those Barclays numbers after a similar fraud alert call I was suspicious about.

    I had a call from:

    08453512291

Which was a recorded message and asked for date of birth, so I just hung up.

Then I got a text claiming to be Barclays asking me to call:

    08453512288

    Immediately.

I Googled these numbers and have found various threads like this saying that these are scams.

I can confirm that they are NOT scams! I phoned Barclays using a number off their website and eventually got through to the fraud team who confirmed that they had indeed tried to call me. Fortunately the transaction that had caused the alert was genuine.

But these are not scam calls, if you get one the best thing to do is to phone Barclays using the fraud number off their website (which annoyingly just puts you through to telephone banking but they will transfer you to the correct place).

Finally, I found this page on the barclays website which confirms both the numbers above as genuine Barclays numbers:

EDIT: OK so I can't post a URL, that's annoying. Well if you go to the Barclays site, there is a page somewhere on there to check phone numbers.

Everyone should use that. I don't know why it isn't permanently on a big banner on the front of the Barclays website to be honest.

I hope this helps some people out.

    cheers,
    Paul.

1: change number and get over it..

2: Contact your phone provider and tell them to block the numbers

    Good grief....

This is actually a REAL one.
Ring the 01 number posted above somewhere to check.
  • Hi,

I can verify that this number IS regarding your Barclays account. My partner and I had made several large payments from our account for a holiday and subsequently the next day our card was declined whilst trying to add to our holiday package. On checking our voicemail on the landline we had 4 missed calls from an automated service. I thought this was quite dodgy and googled the number and it brought up this forum. I told my partner to call the bank direct and NOT the number above and sure enough due to the irregular payments for large amounts of money going out of the account Barclays had frozen the account and was trying to contact us. I would agree with previous posts that state that you should not contact unknown numbers that say they have a message for you but if like us there may be an explaination, you should call your bank directly. Do not ignore! I think this is a very good service from Barclays as it could well have been fraudulent activity and I feel good that the bank was monitoring this and picked up on the activity straight away. :T

err....read the above message a little more carefully you can see that this person is not complaining about the calls but actually advising people to take heed, therefore your very unhelpful and frankly pointless post on telling the member to do the above is moot :o

    Beggars belief doesn't it?
  • It's genuine, they just called me after I bought a new mobile this morning and Tmobile tried to take money out twice. I rang the main Barclays number who confirmed is WAS genuinely them. As others have said, just call Barclays back on a number you are happy with and speak to the fraud team. Easy.

Bit suspicious about all these first time posters saying these calls are genuine.

I dont have a barclays account or a barclays card and received the call from 0845 3512291 and the text telling me to ring 0845 3512288 on a spare mobile phone for which no one has the number because I have only ever used it for music downloads.

    EDIT:
On the other hand I did manage to track down the number checker heyesey mentioned which shows both numbers as genuine.
