O2 Alert Rip Off

Recently 'upgraded' my O2 pay as you go contract to an all in contract for my new Blackberry, during the transfer went 17 mins over my phone call limit and charged a whopping £17 in the process. Wont be forgetting customer service response when contract is up. Completely indifferent.

    £1 a minute? Who/where were you calling?

  • Hi Pimento, the phone calls were just to family and friends mobile numbers, - none of the numbers were premuim rates. Its the highest charge rate Ive ever heard of.

I think you need to phone up customer services again and find out what's really going on as it sounds like you've misunderstood something or the person on the other end of the phone should be out of a job.

There's no way you've been charged £17 for going 17 minutes over your allowance, the standard rate on o2 is 20.4p a minute to mobiles or landlines so either you've gone around 83 minutes over your allowance or those charges are for something else.

Is this your first bill? If so the first bill is always slightly higher due to pro-rata billing (you'll get charged for a couple of days then the next 30 days on top of that).

Does anybody else have access to your phone? Is it possible somebody else made premium rate calls on your mobile or calls to an 070 forwarding number? Were they UK mobile numbers?

Have you subscribed to any premium rate SMS services?

These charges could be any number of things, but I guarantee they're not simply for going 17 minutes over your allowance. Have you got a login for o2.co.uk? Login and view the bill for yourself and find out what's going on or give customer services a call.

The OP has messaged me to say they have moved from a 30 day rolling contract to one for a Blackberry. Therefore the extra is liable to be prorata for a mid-billing cycle upgrade. (ie the difference between what was paid in advance for this month and the increased charge due to upgrade). This can be checked by looking at the bill.
  • I am on O2 pay monthly contract which is due for upgrade next week, I have been looking at upgrading to a Samsung Galaxy S on a 24 month contract for £25.53 per month which included free phone, 100 minutes, unlimited sms and 500mb internet, after looking at their website yesterday O2 have now changed all of their tarifs, it will now cost me £149.99 for the phone £21.00 for 100 mins and 100 sms plus an extra £6 per month for internet, when I called the woman said prices had gone up yesterday, she tried to get the old price but the system refused, So now I have decided to switch to Vodafone who are giving the Galaxy S for free, with 600 minutes, unlimited sms, 1gb internet access and a euro free charge for when we are in Mallorca which means I only pay 75p per connection then the minutes come off my free minutes balance and sms just come off my allowance too. Just waiting for confirmation, which is taking forever.
