On the other hand though, Motability is a charity and perhaps this is how they can gain extra funds and thus offer the cars in the first place.

I don't think this is the case at all. Motability act on our behalf to get us good deals from the manufacturers. Basically, Motability are a huge company car fleet.

The manufacturers do special deals for Motability on cars that they want to shift, thats why the prices move around every quarter. A car might be £1000 deposit this quarter, next it might be £1500 or 0. It might be that it's a new car, or they have a surplus sitting around in dealerships, but if car maker wants to shift a particular model, they make it a good deal on motability, if it's a popular model and they can't keep up with demand, then it's expensive on Motability as they have plenty of buyers waiting to pay full price.

You will also regularly fine that it is cheaper to get a higher spec car over a base model, this is because the residual value will be higher in the end.

Motability are a charity, but they have to do deals with commercial companies who in the end give Motability (US) a good deal because of the number of cars that they lease. Personally I think it's a great deal, you just have to look at whats on offer: ie

Ford Ka 1.2 Zetec 3d HB MP Park, Cost new about £10,500
Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0DI-D GS2 5d SB MP Park, Cost new about £17,500

But both cars are £0 deposit and cost you your total weekly allowance, but one is worth £7k more!
Opinions are like bottoms - We all have one, just some stink more than others

Service Attributable Pension - War Pension - War Pensioners Unemployability Supplement - War Pensioners Invalidity Allowance - War Pensioners Comforts Allowance - War Pensioners Mobility Allowance - War Pensioners Child Allowance - Housing Benefit - Council Tax Benefit

Spot on right. Motability rely on manufacturers offering deals to get decent prices (low advance payments for us).

Unfortunately manufacturers are finding things tough right now, and want/need to make the most profit on every unit they sell. Hence there are fewer cars with NIL or low AP's - certainly when you want an Automatic.

Residual values at lease end don't cut it - and I guess are being affected by the fact that last-years govt subsidy for new car buyers will lower the residuals on 3 year old cars in 3 years time, more of them about.

Certainly the dealers are all expecting APs to rise in the April-June quarter, which is why I wanted to get my order in before month end.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

hmmm might wait until July to see if prices are any better as I've heard they're going up from tomorrow :(

I'm hoping there might be a deal on an s-max or galaxy though :D

Annoyed I couldn't get the s-max last year when it was £495

Looks like you were right to about HP... Certainly major changes coming

Hire Purchase prices are available on request by calling our Customer Services team on 0845 456 4566.

Taken down the pricing structure! I wonder how this will work now, if at all?

If the cabinets own figures of a 30% reduction target are achieved, that, by definition means a 30% reduction in the profitability of Motability, and that means ........... ?
