Nissan Micra. Quite a popular automatic choice.

Automatic polo was a nice car, the older ones were quite small.

Not sure if you would get one for the money but from experiance of a number of automatics I would say a Honda Jazz with the CVT box.

The AA list 5 best small automatics http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/small-autos-five-of-the-best.html This is for new cars but older models are worth a look. Plus there is a link to advice on buying a secondhand car.

Don't know what the auto box is like in the Picanto but I'm more than happy with my manual one. Only available in 2/3/Graphite/Domino/etc so not as cheap as the manual can be had for but £5k will buy a nearly new one IIRC. Try to get one registered after January 2010 if possible for the 7 year warranty (could be pushing the budget though)
  • If her arm strength isn't that great the newer fiats have a city mode button which makes the power steering lighter if thats any help. I don't know if any of the other superminis have that, its not a car sector I pay much attention to.

I didn't see the point in the "city mode" in the Panda I test drove, it made the steering *too* light for parking etc IMO.

Might, as you say, benefit someone with low arm strength but the power steering is light before the button is pressed :)
  • My grandad appreciated it in his grande punto right before he gave up driving recently. I thought it was pointless too, but he liked it, his brain is still sharp as a tack, but he is getting very weak.

Thanks for all your suggestions. After much garage touring and scouting new and second hand options, it MIGHT be the small Peugeot 107 she is going for.

Looked at Nissan, Fiat, Ford, etc as suggested. Tried Auto Trader but second hand, automatic, superminis, local to us are few and far between!

It does seem that her 5k budget is too tight so she's reconsidering buying new.

Anyway, cheers for the help!
