I've got a Mamas and Papas crib you can have, if you live anywhere near Berkshire...
  • Moses baskets are good, wouldnt rate a crib they do look nice. I use to take mine up and downstairs, an easily portable to could put them in the car to go to my mums.

    Two Girls (Id twins)

  • I used a moses basket with both of mine mainly as others have said for the portability aspect.
I didn't bother with a stand - at bedtime I just plonked the moses basket directly in to the cot.
Once they outgrew the basket they went straight in to the cot.

I have brought a moses basket with a stand this time around though (but only cos there is a special offer on at Argos at the moment)

We didn't have a moses for either of the girls as the pram we had for them had a removable carrycot which they slept in until they went in their cot.

Blue bubs' pram however is all one piece so we got a (2nd hand) moses for when he was teeny and then a cotbed. Would have chosen a cotbed over a cot the first two times only we were lucky enough to be given a cot and a junior bed for baby number one (DH's youngest sister is only 3 years older than our eldest) so used those for both girls. Turned out well actually as with the age gap between them DD1 came out of the cot in time for DD2 to go in it!

As someone above said though you are likely to want something you can move round with you initially (moses/carrycot) and then either a cot or cotbed for when they are a bit bigger. Personally I would always go second hand for the moses or equivalent but then I have big babies who outgrow them in a couple of months. Not sure I see the point of a crib tbh, they seem very expensive for something that's not going to last very long (longer than a moses I guess but still) and can't be moved round the house. That might just be me though. :)

My LO (99th centile) is very long and was in her basket until 6 months.. it was a bit cramped but she slept well still so I was happy for her to stay in it. My others which were not so long were in the baskets until 8-9 months!

They all went straight from the basket to the cotbed/cot without issue.

Why don't you measure the floor area you have available for a cot in your room and see if a cotbed will fit in?

most cribs are about the same size as baskets.. there is very little in it usually

Wow, loads of replies, thank you all very much. I'm very glad I asked now, great to hear all your experiences!

We are getting cotbed regardless (as it will fit perfectly in babies room once we move them) but honestly I think it will take up too much space in our bedroom so will prob get the stand and mattress for the moses basket. I've seen a few stands on ebay so should pick one up fairly cheaply.

That was a good point about the hood when the sun shines in the room (didn't think of that).

I think part of the problem is I don't really like the moses basket we were given (without wanting to sound spoilt) I just don't like the colours or the pattern. I am also looking at the one on offer in Argos - will see if I can persuade OH :) Or there are a couple with stands on ebay that are a lot plainer than what we have!

I love the bouncer CL, am keeping my fingers crossed Tesco do another double up event in the near future!

Thanks for the offer onlyroz but am a bit far away from you :D

    Em xx
  • My LO is 16 weeks and still in her Moses basket. Whilst she is in it mostly just in our room, it's portable if we are out at friends for the evening. We have even taken it to Holland! Simply put it in the large suitcase and pack her things inside and around it. It meant that she had something she was familiar with which I'm sure helped her settle. I'm sad that she will out grow it soon, as its the next best thing to co-sleeping, she's right next to the bed and I can settle her really easily without having to get up, which in the first few weeks was quite often!
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before

    Morning!

Our baby is due 31st March and although we've bought a cot bed for their room we also have a Mama's and Papa's travel cot for the first 6 months when he/she is in our room. It'll last longer than a moses basket and we can use it as a playpen after the baby has gone into their own room. I liked the look of the swinging cribs but they seemed to me a waste of money, like the moses basket the baby will grow out of it pretty quick.

Remember to put extra blankets on if you're using a travel cot as a permanent bed. They're very low to the floor so already the coldest part of the room and the first thing a cold draft from the door will hit. My DD would never sleep in one because it was too cold.

WE used the GRaco Contour Electra Bassinette and Travel Cot for the first 6 months. The bassineette allows baby to be higher up in the cot, at an easy level for you to lift in and out. We felt we would get much more use out of this that a moses basket (if you have a larger baby they can grow out of these quickly) and as they grow and move into their own room, you have travel cot for visiting or use as a playpen.

Good luck what ever you decide.
