Preventing ear mites while at a cattery

On two occasions we have put our cat into a cattery and he has come back with ear mites. The first time we just thought we had chosen a bad cattery, so chose a different one next time, and just to be sure we had him in in their isolation pen. He still came back with ear mites.
He's normally an indoor cat, and he's fully vaccinated.
Have we just gotten unlucky with two bad catteries, or is this sort of thing common. I would like to avoid two weeks of having to squirt stuff into the ears of an annoyed cat after this long weekend away.
Does anyone have any advice?

ask your vet for some stronghold as this treats earmites as well as fleas0

Before the visit, I presume?
So is it normal for ear mites to be rampant at catteries then, or did I just get two bad ones in a row?0 -
Our old cats never got them when we used to live them at the cattery we used but that was only a small cattery.0

its not really something ive heard of as being a problem. the stronghold lasts a month, so give it before they go into the cattery.0

Stronghold will only treat mild cases - good idea as a preventor though. If it's bad you need the ear drops...sounds like you have been really unlucky. I never had problems like this - are they changing the bedding and washing it properly between each cat? ?Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
Doing some research, I read that cats normally build up an immunity to them, however Spenny is an indoor cat and thus never normally exposed?
They claim to be changing and washing the bedding, but impossible to prove or disprove. Maybe they're getting transferred via the staff come feeding time?0 -

Hi, I run a cattery and would be horrified if this happened to one of my customers! I can only guess that the cleaning isn't very good - are the pens easily cleanable? Although carpets and "homely" things, such as comfy chairs & cushions look very nice they are very difficult to clean between cats - there is a fine line between everything looking lovely and the reality of thorough cleaning & disinfecting! If they use their own bedding, can you take your bedding instead ? Lovely puss cat btw!0
