Pair of male baby rabbits.

Hi,
Am looking for some helpful advice... last week I brought 2 rabbits from a well known pet store (not sure if I am allowed to name) who very much lay it on that you should keep them in pairs as they are happiest etc.:( Wasn't too much of a problem at first as was happy to have 2, however they are male rabbits and I now realise they shouldn't be kept together. I have had male rabbits before who were both rescued/adopted but were always on their own so this is the first time I've properly brought them. Vet has told me to keep an eye on them till they get neutered and pet shop have told me there might be a chance they could be friends after that happens.
What I want to know is am I better off just separating them now whilst they are 10wks old rather than waiting to see what happens. Have never had this before and would rather get advice from people who might have had experience rather than the pet shop who don't seem to know what they are talking about.
Hope this makes sense. Am really upset about it all. Have been told I could take one back but I don't really want to as would rather just buy another hutch and know that he was safe and looked after by myself rather than always worry what happened to him.
Thanks in advance for your help.

We had two male rabbits in different hutches prior to neutering, but when they were outside together all hell broke loose! There used to be blood and fur flying everywhere it was awful. My normally timid husband used to get between them and break it up.
Once they were neutered things were very different, although one still seemed to have the urge to mount the other occasionally but no more fighting. Eventually, we put them in a new large hutch and they lived very contentedly.0 -
I had my boys in together... then they grew testicles and one of them was still adorable but the other was demonic... he went in a separate hutch until I could get them neutered.. it took about a week for him to calm down again after the op but they adore each other again.
I'd keep them both together now so they form a bond but at the first sign of trouble (or humping) or as early as your vet will do them get them neutered.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Thanks for the replies - you have given me hope! :jThe reason I was happy to get two was because I wanted them to have company whilst I was at work. At the moment there is no sign of puberty- I will speak to the vet tomorrow (they are being vaccinated) about what age they will neuter them - I have seen some will only do it at 5 months+.
Am hoping they will use the next few weeks to bond!0 -
Some vets will do them as soon as their plums drop, at around 4 months. The sooner they are done, the more chance of them being happy together. If they start chasing, humping then you need to seperate them but if possible only by mesh so they can still see and smell each other. After neutering they are best left seperated for about 4 weeks to let their hormones die down. When they are put back together for the first time it needs to be on neutral ground so they dont get territorial and then clean out the hutch with vinegar and water to take the scent away and hopefully they will be fine. If you go on the rabbits united forum, you will find lots of info re bonding. Good luck:)0

No need to separate now - or be upset by it. Even unneutered males and females can fight - or procreate!
I have two boys. One was already done when I got the second - a baby. They lives together quite happily until the complete boy got hormonal. It was obvious as he was spraying and they were starting to bicker. We had the second boy neutered and they briefly lived apart while he healed. Then they went back together easy as anything and have been best of friends ever since.
Bunnies need company.0 -
I had brother rabbits who lived together happily all their lives, neutered as soon as the vets would do it.
I've also had a group of 5 living together, 3 males 2 females, all unrelated. It took time and patience, but rabbits love company!!
all 5 together.

Your rabbits are sooo cute!!!
Thank you all so much for your advice-it was much appreciated. We have been to the vet who has confirmed they are both male and will neuter them when they reach 6 months.
Feel much better now knowing there is a chance they will live happily together. :j0 -
I have two pairs of males. One are unrelated whom I bonded together and one who are brothers. You really need to get them neutered earlier than six months. As soon as their testicals drop (approx 12 weeks onwards) the can get a bit hormonal and start scrapping. Its really important you get them neutered early (preferably at the same time so you don't have to seperate) as if they have a big fight it will be harder to rebond them once they are neutered. I was unlucky in that my two brothers one developed quicker than the other so they had to be seperated temporarily but they are now back together.
There is so much info saying that male bunnies cannot get on but the same can be said about females or mixed pairs. The most important thing is neutering and the bunnies personalities. Boys can be tricker granted but not always impossible, sometimes it just need patience.
By the way there goes trouble can you pm me your address I need to bunny nap yours they are adorable!0 -

ooooohhhh... me luffs bunnies!!!!!!!!!!
I thought they would be really dull but ours are so funny... they are in a grump at the moment because they want to go out in their run and it is freezing and I don't have a warm place for them to snuggle up just the open run.. This year I intend getting them a summer house.. so they can live outside in the summer and come in and be snuggle in winter.. they are house bunnies and run amok.. but they are grumpy and refuse to come out to play at the moment.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
