Strong but lightweight luggage

Does anyone have any recommendations for luggage which is baggage-handler proof?

Over the last 5 years I've had 3 cases smashed due to the heavy-handed ways of airport staff and I really want to be able to buy a case or two knowing that they'll still be in one piece when we get to the other end of the flight.

Our next holiday has a weight limit of 20kgs and it's for 2 weeks so I'm going to need as lightweight a case as possible.

Thanks in advance :)
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

We bought some antler cases and they have lasted well (I think they were £60 each).

One of the reasons for buying this make was that we have had cases damaged in the past 3 times.
In each case we have got our money back but in one case we had to take to cases back to the shop to get them sent off to get a letter to say they could not be economically repaired. That was a 50 mile round trip (and I don't live in the sticks).
The reason why we bought the Antler cases is that there is a dealer close by so it it happens again we don't need to spend a fortune getting the proof we need for a claim.
So I'd say bear that in mind too as a long trip could in some cases exceed the cost of your cases.

We have been away with these plenty of time without issue.
They are medium in size but for the low luggage allowances these days you don't need a large case and in fact the luggage will rattle around.

Our Delsey wheeled holdalls have done over a dozen flights each including three touring trips to India where they were thrown on and off buses and a multi stop trip to the Far East.

They have suffered no more than slightly scuffed corners
  • I bought these from Argos.

Very cheap and withstood an easyjet flight very well.

The taxi driver rammed it into a post on the way from the airport and no damage!

I bought some cheap cases from Sports Direct for our last holiday, they were £15 each, have seen the damage to our previous suitcases, they hold about 20kg when fully packed, make sure you get the right size so you're not tempted to overpack.

20kg is loads of weight for a fortnight - though it does help we make sure there's a laundry nearby when we go away - I don't think I 've got 2 weeks worth of holiday clothes.:o

We have had some tripp cases from Debenhams and they have withstood 6 flights and are still fine, just look very very grubby ( last time at JFK someone seems to have plonked them into a dirty puddle.

They aren't hard cases though and were something like £35 a shot.

they were like this, but plain red.

My daughter has the hard plastic ones and hers are all cracked and broken with being thrown around at the airport. This year she's going to buy the holdall type on wheels.

I bought a Sub Zero G case and cabin bag and although they've only done 3 long haul flights so far, they have held well, the larger case looks a bit grubby already but it is pink & white, so not surprising really. They are incredibly light, I have a medium sized one, sorry, I don't have the dimensions, but it weights about 3kg so will easily take clothes for 2 weeks summer holiday. I bought my case in Matalan but we also have a shop called Bags etc that sells them and Domo is another, google Sub Zero G and you should find them.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply :)

I think it's probably the hard-shell type case that gets damaged so easily, so will check out the ones you've recommended.

Ailuro2 - you obviously travel light, something I've never been accused of :rotfl::rotfl:

Just an update to let you know that having looked at all recommendations, I decided on the Sub Zero G as they are supposed to be the lightest cases on the market and strong with it - we shall see...at least they have a 10 year guarantee.

In case anyone else wants new cases anytime soon, I ordered them from Direct Luggage.co.uk on a 10% off coupon code (specialoffer10) which made them significantly cheaper than elsewhere. I chose the very pretty butterfly design so I'll be able to spot them easily on the carousel :D

ETA: and they're free delivery too.

I have two sub zero cases and would not recommend for hold luggage, both used once and both had the material sliced open were the handle runs down the inside. The guarantee does not cover you for baggage handling brutality. Hope this helps.
