returns policy John Lewis (Kettle)

Hi everyone
just wondering if someone here could clarify something before I go to John Lewis.
Our kettle (Krups) started leaking. It was a wedding present (from a list we had a John Lewis) and the cost of it was (if I remember correctly) around £50-£60 ( I seem to think it £57.00 but couldn't say for sure). We got married in August 2007 and started using the kettle after our honeymoon (mid September).
I realise that we have used the kettle now for about 3 1/2 years but at a cost of about £50/£60 I expected it to last a longer than that. Of course it is a much used item but I would have thought that should be considered in the design and we do look after our appliances.
Have I got a leg to stand on or am I just wasting my time/ money?
I appreciate a full refund/ swap will be out of the question after 3 1/2 years but what about a part refund/ money off a replacement?
Thank you
Anne

Hi
One of the FAQs in our ReadMe sticky covers this area (link below) and it refers to a thread which goes into more detail if you need it.
Once you've read it you'll have a much better idea of whether or not you wish to pursue things further, and how to do so... IF.
How are partial refunds for price/age/usage calculated?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Thank you Squeaky.
I'll pop in to John Lewis in my lunch break to ask. It can't hurt and they are known for good customer service. Got nothing to lose really (apart from a little time). Who knows.. maybe they'll offer me a few pennies off a new kettle. Will not be spending that much on a kettle again though. Not if I should only expect a life expectancy of 3 1/2 years.0 -
Please bear in mind that as the kettle was a present to you then effectively you have no consumer rights regarding this issue. You're not the consumer therefore legally you don't have a leg to stand on as you have no contract with John Lewis.0

If you have no proof of purchase, you're not going to get very far at all.0

Well it was purchased through the wedding list we have set up. We still have all the delivery details, etc... and when I explained this to John Lewis they are more than happy to accept that. When I mentioned the time scale though she said she could not help. They haven't even got that particular model anymore because Krups discontinued it.
I have since discovered (some more online research into the actual product) that a lot of people have exactly the same problem with the kettle. So no surprise it got discontinued.
Ah well...
I might email Krups directly, but I am not holding out any hope.
Annoying though that faulty equipment will not be replaced. I did expect better at that price and from the make.

Not quite correct because it was purchased through our list. When we set up the list we have enquired about faulty goods/ warranty etc and we were told the same rights apply. This is also the response I received from the lady at John Lewis this lunch time. Just the time period was the issue.0 -
Life's too short, buy another one, have a cuppa and move on.0
