dating a soldier?

i have recently started an email relationship with a soldier serving in iraq. he seems a great guy on paper but have not just my fingers burned in the past but my whole body. he is already talking about meeting up when he has leave even though he lives in dallas. he is a widower and if to be believed has not had a relationship with anyone since she was killed in car accident 5 years ago. obviously serving in iraq does not really go hand in hand with going to a club every weekend so he may well be telling the truth. my question is what is like dating a soldier. he seems very full on and i wonder if this is because of his circumstances or just the way he is?

Just see it for what it is, a few letters nothing more.
If you want to date a soldier find one a bit closer to home.

My hubby had just landed from his 5th tour of Northern Ireland when I met him. He was there during the Omagh bombings and smelt of death for 6 months after. He was screwed up for a long time, and I'm not even sure if he's even over his 22 years service now.

Be careful, soldiers are just like the rest of us, don't date a soldier just because he's a soldier, date him because you like him.

OP have you started one of those 'relationships from afar' because you feel safer than with the real thing if you've been hurt badly before?

  • Dating a soldier, or in my case marrying one, is one of the hardest relationships you will ever come across.
    If it ain't reduced, i don't buy it! :j

thanks everyone for some really advice. i too was a little unsure of it all which is why i came on here. i knew mse would have some good points. as for dating ? if you would call it that at stage because he is a soldier or far awy, no to both. it was a photo of him in his civvy clothes that attracted me to him. at 47 i can honestly say have not had that physical attraction since meeting my 1st husband when i was 15. that in itself raised a warning bell, what did he see in me? so maybe it is a scam. i will certainly tread careful. not that i would have money to send him in the first place. he does seem very full on so i will be on my guard. thanks again to all. its comforting knowing we all have eachothers back

I assume that it is not a British soldier as the UK pulled out of Iraq last year
