Presumably so they can watch digital television on the TVs that have no digital decoder of any sort.
And not wishing to pay Sky for mutli-room or buy a whole load of Sky boxes and arrange extra feeds to them including upgrading the LNB.

    Pretty obvious really.

Because the Sky+ is only connected to the TV in the lounge. We don't have sky multiroom (which as I understand it only works in one other room and costs more money!).

We want to be able to watch TV in the other rooms (2 x bedrooms, kitchen, office) after our transmitter goes digital. The existing TV's work fine, all we'll need is the Freeview boxes.

I've seen some really small boxes on eBay that plug straight into the back of the TV scart socket (and swivel through 90 degrees) at around £15.00 each -does anyone have any experience of these?

Yes, all the TV's have SCART sockets, thought the lounge TV has two - one used by the DVD player, the other by Sky+, so where will the Freeview box plug in? Will be need an adaptor?

You won't really need one for the lounge since you can watch TV through the Sky box. You can get scart switchers but these can be a bit of a faff so unless you have a good reason to need digital terrestrial in addition to Sky in your lounge I'd save the money and not bother getting a freeview box for the lounge, just the other 4 rooms.

There is a reason for wanting this. We did have the house cabled by a mate a few years back so that the upstairs & kitchen TV's are able to watch Sky - but only the programme that is being viewed in the lounge and is currently tuned in by the Sky box (i.e. not true multiroom). This is useful when I get banished elsewhere in the house to watch the football that is on Sky, and my other half can still watch terrestrial TV - hence the need for Freeview in the lounge too. Hope that this makes sense!

Fair enough. Assuming that there is no other inputs on the TV that can be used by any of the devices (e.g. if your DVD player has composite out and your TV supports this input), you'll need something like this - http://www.marksandspencer.com/M-amp-S-Scart-Switcher/dp/B00168RA12?extid=TP_2_FRO_T_MSF_

You could plug the Freeview and Sky boxes into that, and just press the button to switch between which one the lounge TV displays. You can get fancier switchers that have remote controls so you don't have to get up to switch, but these obviously cost more and it means another remote that gets lost when you need it :rotfl:

This type is the one I purchased from Ebay as mentioned in my previous post. Quite small and hidden behind the set too. Plugs into your scart socket, connect your aerial and plug in small mains adaptor & tune in. The one I purchased can also record programs onto USB or SD card. The EPG is only one day however but if you just wish to turn on and watch TV it works for me.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you!
  • Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. I think that the way to go is to get a Freeview box for the lounge TV that connects to the ariel socket and the smaller Scart plug in Freeview boxes for the other TV's.
