What annoys me about bank charges is the fact, as many people have mentioned, that a bill may come out a day earlier than expected (this has happened due to weekends etc). My wage goes in a day later but the DD has already been returned, £38 fee charged all for a £4.99 DD. Then £34 for being unouthorised OD fr 1 day. So following month I have £72 less on an already tight budget. AND i didn't even get a letter to tell me the DD was returned!! I bank with HSBC and RBS and I can only ever remember recieving a letter once about a returned DD!! I have worked in a bank and the only process for returning a DD is sending a letter to the originators bank. The letters are all on a database and only take 2 minutes to complete!
So my point is £72 for a £4.99 DD to be returned, they don't even send me notification of this! I then struggle the following month with often the same consequences. I call them to explain the circumstances and they do nothing to help! Then when my wages go in rather than being able to pay 2 or 3 bills I have to pay charges and get even deeper in Debt. Now if they had just let the £4.99 DD go through then the following day it would be paid back!0 -

It's not a divine right, it is a right under law. You don't like the laws of this country, move to another one or get them changed.
Where do you think the banks got the right to go outside the law and charge what they felt like? They have less mandate to do this than I have to claim back money unlawfully removed from my bank account.
I can't charge the bank an arbitrary fee for each occasion of this removal of funds, unfortunately, the law prevents it, the same law that I am claiming under.0 -
manofthemoment wrote:Why do people think they have a divine right to get all this money back. Banks have to manage their money to make money for the shareholders. If their customers abuse their accounts by borrowing from them without permission and spending irresponsibly, then this stops them from managing their business effectively. The terms of bank accounts, loans and credit cards are set out and you agree to them when you take out the product, so how can you complain when the charges are applied.
OK I got myself in debt, but I only missed one credit card payment and I got charged 30 quid, its a fair cop I missed the payment so I paid the fee without grumbling and made sure I payed it promptly the next time. Once when I was about to go past my overdraft limit I got off my !!!! and went to the bank to ask them for a temporary extension so that I was not borrowing without permission. They granted it and I had no extra charges applied. If you have these charges it is probably because you didn't do anything about it, so effectively you were using someone else's money without their permission. The charges have acted as a detterant for me stay within my limits, I don't think they should be considered unlawful because this will add to the culture of 'consequence free spending' that we are seeing at the moment.
And my boss totally shafted me by telling me while I was on maternity leave that he couldn't afford to pay me!!! (the day all my direct debits were due out and I couldn't stop them!) And then when I objected he made me redundant, but didn't give me any redundancy, and then when I signed on he told a load of lies to the benefits agency which meant I didn't have any money. And how did the bank respond - by charging me £30 per dd and then some and then because I couldn't put the money in to cover the charges they charged me more, AND YES I GOT OFF MY BACKSIDE AND TOLD THE BANK AND WHAT DID THEY DO! THEY WITHDREW MY OVERDRAFT COMPLETELY AND THEN CHARGED ME FOR HAVING AN UNAUTHORISED OVERDRAFT AND THEN CHARGED ME AT PREMIUM INTEREST RATES FOR HAVING AN UNAUTHORISED OVERDRAFT.Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

I was charged £35 for the failed direct debit, which took me over my over draft limit.
This was then charged £50 for unarranged borrowing.
Because of that I was then short of money when I got paid which meant I could not pay the £200 I owed to Egg, who the direct debit was going to.
Egg then charged me for missed payments on my loan and threatened to terminate it.
I contacted Natwest to tell them about the situation and was offered advice on how to manage my account and asked if I would like to apply for an overdraft extension.
Er, isn't that what I tried to do anyway.
Ultimately I managed to change the date of my direct debit to Egg so it did not happen again but Natwest still cost me money despite the fact I tried to go down the right paths.
Maybe you've been lucky and never had any problems with your bank, but there's plenty of people on here who have been royally b*ggered and deserve to get some revenge.
Also, do you genuinely believe it costs £35 to send a letter, or £50 because someone is a few quid over a limit - er no.
So may I suggest you go to a board where your mindless comments will be welcomed - i.e Natwest's board of directors.
I think you're slightly disillusioned; Natwest didn't 'cost' you money - you did by not organising yourself to have funds in your account to cover the direct debit.0
