The problem with the iPod (and as far as I know it's the same for the iPhone) is that it stores the music with weird filenames so it can be a bit annoying if you just mount it as a HD and copy the music.

There's software that automates the whole process and sorts out the filenames, as pointed out mediamonkey is a good one. See also this guide - http://www.metaphoriclabs.com/articles/5-ways-to-copy-music-off-your-ipod-windows-mac-os-x/

I cant risk copying direct from old laptop to new laptop - old laptop has got a virus in it and I dont want to transfer it to the new one. I want to transer from my iphone to new laptop.

Can I refer you back to my proposed solution above at #3 - I had System Tool infection on my laptop, and I removed the drive, put it in a caddy, and installed a fresh drive in the laptop. I then copied my data files from the old drive to the new drive in the laptop. No infection on the new drive.

I really can't see the music files and others in your iTunes library harbouring the virus......
