Are you allowed to move a master socket?

My master socket is in the hallway towards the outer edge of the house, I would like the master socket closer to a mains point in the living room (in case I upgrade to broadband etc)
it is a long and awkaward cable run from the present location to a new one.
Can the master socket be moved if the block connection and dropwire is left undisturbed?

  • NO. the cable up to and including the master socket belongs to openreach. if you move it and a fault develops then you may be charged to put it right.

    Depends on who you believe. A former poster has stated that it is an "urban myth" that you cannot diy a master socket move and he got that from bt call centre operatives. Do it right and nobody will ever know!!

    You can do what you like as long as you dont get found out.
    Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Does that apply to murder too?
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    There is no need to move it. Just run an extension to your new location.

    Problem is if you move the master socket,you are increasing the length of your line which may drop your bband speed even lower if you are on what is known as a 'Long Line'.
    Your best bet would be to leave the master socket where it is & fit a dedicated hard wired LJU-2/3A;

    That's what I have done in my home.I have an extension purely for BBand & phone ran from the Master to the living room.I have also wired other extensions from a 77A junction box which I have ran,again from the Master,into the loft & down into the other rooms.In all,I have two extensions per room in case I need them.
    Also mean's if cable ever come to my town,all they have to do is run the Siamese drop cable into the attic & connect up there.

    Just a thought...

    The OP never mentioned DIYing it. I'm sure you could arrange something with BT. For a fee of course!
