I wouldn't tell them he had asked to see them.. if he turns up it is a nice surprise if he doesn't they have a usual day without the disappointment and upset of him not turning up... which is exactly what I do with my lot.
under the 'I miss daddy' write a further note.. 'and he misses you too' ..

Well, he got in touch this morning and the kids are now with him. They were soooooooo excited to see Daddy.

Im glad for your kids that they have been able to see their dad. It does speak volumes about trying to control you that he leaves it till today to confirm seeing them. That shows no respect for you maybe making plans. It is as if all life stops to revolve round him.
I think you are being a great mum to your kids and I hope that their dad will start to treat you all much better soon.0
