Coal that doesnt burn!

We usually buy our coal from the local garden centre which used to be decent coal for a good price. At the moment they have an offer on for 3 bags for £20 so we got some. It is the worst coal I have ever had and bizarrely it doesnt burn - it just smoulders.
If you put a log on as well the log will burn but the coal will still just smoulder away. We thought it might be damp but after being in our dry coal shed for a couple of weeks its no better. I am really annoyed because we have got three bags of the damned stuff. What to do? Should we get some better coal and mix it in?
I feel like going back and complaining.

Just take the coal back and tell them it's faulty. They may already know, hence the 3 bags for £20.0

Yes you have bought some of the many versions of smokeless coal. The nicest coal is ordinary house coal which can only be used in non smokeless zones. It does however burn with a large flame and is easy to light. I never buy the smokeless stuff now for my open fire.0
