Flour - Which is best supermarket own brand or well known brand?

Options
Do you use a named flour and marg (eg homepride, stork) or just use the supermarkets own equivalent?

How important is it to the outcome of the cake?

Many thanks!

Nope use Sainsbury's own brand marg (not basics though) and their basics flour. Never had any complaints, in fact one friend said my sponge was like shop bought which I took to be a compliment :rotfl:

Aldi flour works well for cakes and pastry. I always use Stork soft margarine for cakes which is usually cheapest in Asda.

I've never had complaints - my friends say mine is nothing like shop bought, which I take as a compliment :D

I use supermarkets own flour and flora (original) because that is the marg my son likes, he doesn't like butter.

I use Value from Mr T ('cause that's nearest) regularly - probably use at least 3kg a week - but would buy basics from others supermarkets too. The only thing I would always do with value flours is sieve them. Definitely no complaints about quality from people eating my cakes!

Use Mr T's bread flour too - and actually find it gives me better results than named brands - but I don't get on with Mr L's bread flour!

If I'm using a soft margarine, it will be Stork SB - personally I definitely see a difference in the mix if I use own brand. But for block margarine (or baking fat or whatever the technically correct name is these days!) it will be supermarket own label.

I used Tesco's value flour and unsalted butter for my parent's anniversary cake. NO problems at all.

I'm doing my brother's 3 tier wedding cake for July, and intend to use the same.

I see little point in upgrading when I found the results of the value to be excellent.

Sainsburys basics, tesco value or Lidls plain & self raising flours (depends where that week's shop is scheduled as I shop around). We are dairy free so most cakes etc are made with sunflower oil.

I use stork block (the pastry one in the paper packet), lard & cookeen in varying amounts for pastries.

Lidls bread flour + olive oil for pizza dough, with sunflower oil for most other breads. I do add branded wholemeal or granary flour to some things but it's what's on special offer when I'm buying rather than a choice made on any kind of brand loyalty.

Wherever you buy it, pop the bag in the freezer for 48 hours to kill off any potential weevil eggs and then store in airtight containers to keep it nice and fresh until needed.

I use Doves Farm flour, but more for ethical reasons than for any particular quality of the flour. It is very good, though, I use their stuff for everything.

I don't bake with margarine so I can't give any recommendations there!
