A&L ISA - interest paid in january?

I opened a cash ISA in May 2010 with A&L & transfered in money from my existing ISA.
I spoke to the bank recently and was told that the interest would be paid in may on the anniversary of opening my account, however I've just checked my online account and interest was paid on 03/01/2011.
I'm guessing that i'll receive an additional interest payment in May (for Jan - May). Does anyone know why they do this? All my previous ISA's have paid the interest on the anniversary of opening. Am a bit confused!!
