Reminds me of the time when a customer once rang me when I worked at Barclays, gave me their account number and it was invalid. I asked to check the sorting code and they insisted "it's your branch, you should know that". When I eventually did get it from them, it turned out it was a HSBC account. The customer then insisted she'd called HSBC and I must be trying to trick her by claiming to be Barclays

As for your missing account, if you can't find any paperwork at all, fill in a Dormant Bank Account claim form, making sure to include as much information as possible (including the address the account was registered to, the full name and address and DOB of the signatories, and if they've moved, include previous addresses too).
