there is a large amount of cash lying in an account in my local bank a group of us set up the joint account with 2 signatories we withdrew what we needed for a big group nite out and the rest lay dormant for a while. now the work place has been extended the pass book lost an we need our money for xmas nite out. the bank insists they have no acess to it untilwe getaccount no off the book neither of us memorised the number we have no book the bank insists there s no record of our names or name of the account on their computer. they were so off hand with us and didn t offer any help at all they have a hefty sum of our hard earned tips so how do we get it back and move bank ?

  • Can you remember when and where you made the last withdrawal? I would have thought the bank would (might) have a record of transactions on that day.
  • who was the statement being sent to - they could trace the details from the name & address of that person
  • who was the statement being sent to - they could trace the details from the name & address of that person

If a passbook is in issue statements are not normally available.
  • when he said Bank I assumed he meant a proper clearing bank which issues statements & not a building society newly turned 'bank'
  • All passbook accounts are non statements in my experience.
  • AFAIK banks are legally obliged to issue bank statements, building socities tend to issue passbooks - its a bit of a grey area when the word 'bank' was in the same sentence as 'passbook' - I know a few of the building socities have taken 'bank' status but still do not offer the full service on offer with the main banks, the old 'big four' if you like - if the OP could clarify which Bank/BS he's referring to it would help
  • Old tsb customers have passbook savings accounts but cannot have statement on account.

You don't have any proof whatsoever you ever had an account ??

Who opened account & when ??
Where & when was money paid in ??
    What address was used ??

Any of these will allow tracing back to account.

If all trace of account has disappeared from bank's system, then you've got a problem & the bank has got a bigger problem, as this should be impossible.

You'll have to provide some additional information to bank to trace account.

If a customer comes in and has no passbook we can always find the account using name/address/postcode...unless it's over 20 years old in which case it's not on the system but can be traced by Head Office. It's unlikely all trace of he account has disappeared-even if it was closed, there would be a record of it. This may sound stupid but are you sure you asked in the right bank?

I think this is a very valid question,
on a par with a customer I served recently who swore blind that I renewed her TV licence last year despite working in a bank!
