My daughter (named driver) and her b/f just recently passed there test, they paid just over 2k for insurance for a 3 cylinder 900c Daewoo matiz. This is on proviso they pass the pass plus which both have down 1st part need to do two parts apparently.

Not sure who they insured with but it was cheapest they could get they tried loads of companies

My 19 year old son and I have just been through the journey of getting him insured.

Original quotes he got for a 2002 1.4 Peugeot 206 were around £2200 so I took over.

Mechanisms I used to reduction the premiums were:
    • Adding both my Wife and I as named Drivers
    • 3rd party over fully comp
    • Stating the car was parked on the street rather than on the drive
    • Going to Admiral and adding both my car and my wifes to a multicar policy
    • Steadfastly ignoring addons and additional "benefits"
    • Paying insurance as a lump sum

The latter after when asking for monthly payments found it bumped up the premium by £800:eek: although the guy on the phone straight faced claimed the APR was under 10%.

    Final quote £1430.

Actually came out less than the cost of the car :rotfl:

All you can do is get the smallest engine you can find. Possibly a 1.0 litre micra or something similar

Nothing to do with it. Look at the insurance group, not the engine size. I got a 1.9 TDI (140BHP) golf insured for the same price as my neighbours 1.2 Corsa.

@OP: You can check insurance groups by going onto autotrader, finding a similar car, and clicking on "Vehicle Summery."

Another tip would be, if his mother has a license for more then 5 years, add HER as a name driver and it should cut a couple of hundred quid off. Don't even try to front the other way around, as that was back in the day, but now, insurance companies know the trick and charge triple if an adult was the main driver.
