    Male - 18 = ££££ premiums

It's carp i know but younger drivers do pose the highest risk on the road

All you can do is get the smallest engine you can find. Possibly a 1.0 litre micra or something similar
If Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred

indeed insurance has gone up, but there are allot of way to reduce quotes.

compare sites is one, but only as starting point, note down those who have quoted cheapest then visit their sites and redo the quote again.

being a named driver can reduce quotes listed as infrequent user.

security systems fetch quotes down thatcham cat 2 immobiliser or cat 1 alarms installed have benefits security wise and insurance wise.

being accurate about mileage lower the mileage lower the quote but not lowering it so you go thousends off actual mileage he can do. theres room to play with insurers regarding mileage, unforseen unexpected mileage emergency's you cant help it if a relative is in hospital or your car is broken leaving no choice but to drive his for a short period and using for house hold shopping etc.

multicar policie's work out cheaper if more than 1 car under the same address.

fully comp works out chaeper than third party or third party fire and theft 90% of the time.

the type of car driven can have the biggest impact on insurance.
for e.g peugeot 307 1.6 hdi estate may be cheaper to insure than a fiesta 1.25 zetec so think out the box and keep a open mind when looking on a vehicle.

    saxo
    clio
    fiesta
    corsa

are all common cars and most commanly accident victims amoungs young drivers.

there are other uncommon vehicles with low engine cheap to insure

skoda fabia 1.4 MPI (a VW polo basically interior and engine wise)
    nissan micra.
    toyata aygo.
    toyota yaris.
    chevreolet matiz.
    proton GEN2.

upping the excess always bring down policies,

but young driver excess is compulsory £350-£500 with some insurers, adding a voluntary £350 -£500 may bring down but bare in mind any misshap happens and £700 you/he pay the insurers to start a repair or lose in a total loss payout.

Matiz i know will eventually screw you in the Road Tax department - avoid it like the plague!

As for cheap insurance, he's 18 - the two don't go together!
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.

thanx for the advice. i know it's not going to be cheap but he's got to start somewhere. i've been looking at http://www.youngmarmalade.co.uk/
but don't really understand how it works . anybody understand it or used it before?

Young Marmalade usually represents poor value because you pay over the odds for the car they sell you (ie near to full list on something like a Corsa). Example from their site - £8950.30 ex metallic paint for a base model 1.2 Corsa which Arnold Clark are currently selling for £7995. £7615 for a Fiat Panda 1.1 Active which can be had for £5995.

I'd go with getting quotes on less desirable cars. My first car was a 1.5 Nissan Almera which was cheaper to insure than a Corsa etc. A 3 year old Panda can be had for about £2700 and will be cheaper to insure.

Admiral Group tend to be the most favourable insurer for young drivers. Not the best cover in the world but they're not as adverse to high risk as some of the high street insurers.

One suggestion I've seen recently is to try the quotes on something like a slightly older Kia (2000-2005), apparently not only are the cars cheap (and often better specced than the equivilent age bigger brand), but because they aren't popular with younger people the insurance can be cheaper.
  • try cooperative insurance they seem to be the cheapest for me and my brother in law 21 with a previous ban he just moved areas and his old insurance wanted £1000 extra to cover him eventhough he is in a low risk area. coop beat his old quote of 765 to 695 full comp.

Try the insurance board as this question is often asked on there

Actually usually slightly higher insurance group wise than more mainstream cars though - my 2011 Picanto is about £50 a year more to insure than an equivalent Panda, for instance.
