if you know a student take them along with you to buy it! with my student discount got about £100 off my macbook and about £150 off apple care so paid £45 for the 3 year apple care! ... didnt really think it was worth argueing about at that price!
  • Yes Macs are more reliable and easier to maintain on the software front. However, like any complex machine they can go wrong and sometimes <gasp> they do break down. It really comes down to (a) how proficient you are with computers and Macs in particular and (b) the type of Mac you own. The portables are more delicate than the desktops and so more prone to breaking down and thus needing repair. I have used Macs for years, both desktops and portables and only bought AppleCare once for a portable - and never had cause to use it.

AppleCare will give a new user telephone support over the initial 90 day(?) period which a new user will find valuable. One very important thing to note is that there is little or no discounting on Macs BUT if you buy one at John Lewis they will give you 2 years parts and labour at the same price. This does NOT give the extended telephone support but does extend the piece of mind at no extra cost.
