HTC Desire Memory

You've got your wires crossed a little, it has 576MB total RAM, not internal storage.
It has a total of 512MB internal storage, which is partitioned into /system /data /cache /boot /recovery /misc etc.
The figure of 147.62MB is the total space on /data which is where apps, their data, settings, messages etc are stored. Sense UI is a space hog so it needs a larger /system partion than its brother the Nexus One, which has 196MB on /data.0 -
Root it and install a custom ROM and apps2sd. My Desire is currently running the Desire HD firmware and with apps2sd shows that with everything installed (a LOT!) I have over 1Gb of internal memory left.
That said rooting and changing ROM's isn't for the faint-hearted, do some Googling on it if it takes your fancy.
