Also you pay a premium for buying 6 months of VED but the refund is at the 12 month rate.

Like I said, do it at the end of the month.

But it has always been that way. I don't know of anything that you don't pay a premium, if you but half; ten cigarettes, half a loaf etc. always costs more.

I'm with Flyboy on this one.
I don't see the "scam" element at all.

If the car is untaxed and sorned then it should be off the road. If it has no insurance it should be off the road.
As far as I can see all the DVLA have done is reiterate the point....if it's uninsured you must sorn it and remove it from the road....but it should be off the road anyway...so why not sorn it??
If it has no tax, then you must sorn it.....because it should be off the road. You can choose to continue the insurance if you please (ie for Third party cover, or more if expensive car).

My issue with it, is because of all the mistakes the DVLA make, you may think you are SORN but the DVLA still hit you with fines.

If done online, you have the email confirmation to prove it.

yes you do, or you will if the new law comes in. any vehicle that is not insured must be sorned, to sorn a car you must return any unused tax for a refund.

i may sound like a bulls**tter but other posters should back me up on this, up untill this week the wording on the dvla site was different to what it say now, it said that any car that is uninsured must be sorned and any unused tax returned for a refund, even classic cars with free tax must be returned.
    it now says..............
How does this affect a vehicle used only in the summer?

If you have a vehicle that is not insured, but which is still taxed you could face a penalty. This includes motor caravans, motorbikes and classic cars – all vehicles that people sometimes leave uninsured for part of the year.
