Yes. Unless the tax disc has run out obviously.

Being SORNed and being taxed are mutually exclusive.

Why is there such a big issue with SORN'ing the car if its untaxed or uninsured?

Takes a minute or 2 to do it online. Why would your uninsured car need to be on the road?

My issue with it, is because of all the mistakes the DVLA make, you may think you are SORN but the DVLA still hit you with fines.

The other issue with this is that. You now HAVE to SORN and return the disc where as before that was optional. Meaning now you cannot allow test drives in a car you are trying to sell, after buying a new car. And you cannot casually take your car off the road after insurance ends and simply put it back on the road just by opening your insurance policy again, now you'll have to wait until you receive your insurance cert before you can tax it again. Meaning you could be insured for a number of days when you cannot legally drive the car anywhere.

TBH the real criminals are probably driving about in untaxed/uninsured/unMOTed cars that are registered to someone else anyway, right?

Or SORN'd cars which won't get the automatic penalty letter.

    Exactly :wall:

All they're doing is penalising the honest motorist who like you say wants to sell a car privately after replacing it / has a toy for the weekend that only comes out once every couple of months / etc :(

Thanks Paddedjohn I know I saw it somewhere...

Still an eye opener, but I can see the logic in it.

DVLA are trying to clamp down on millions of uninsured drivers on the road.

However not sure how this will help the legally insured drivers, if anything they will be worse off having insurance all year round and also the hassle of getting it SORN.

However I'm sure the government will make more money out of it as always.

Those are your choices then. When this law becomes enforceable you will need continuous insurance or get it SORNed. If it forces more drivers to legally insure their cars, the insurance companies won't be paying out for uninsured drivers and they won't be charging you for it.

How will the government make more money out of it?

and another scam is if the car is uninsured on private property you have to sorn it and return any unused tax for a refund.

Sorry, but I can't see where the "scam" is.

the dvla will only refund full months, if you return your tax early in the month you lose the remainder, then if you sell the car a week later the new owners would have to tax it again, thus the dvla are getting paid twice for the same month.

Return it later in the month then, problem sorted.
