Poorly dog after neutering, feel like i'm being fobbed off by vets.

My 10 month old springer spaniel was neutered last Friday, everything went ok and he seemed to be recovering well. He had a check up on Monday afternoon and they said that everything was healing ok, he was just a little bruised and swollen so they want to see him again next week.
Since Monday he has gone downhill, he just mopes around looking depressed most of the time, he doesn't get excited when someone rings the doorbell, doesn't even get up when someone comes in, he's not even chasing the cats anymore! He is eating but only a little bit, he was underweight when was first got him 6 weeks ago (18kg) when he was neutered he weighed 15kg, weightloss put down to his very sensitive stomach, i'm worried about him losing more weight now. He is drinking and going to the toilet, he doesn't have diarrhea but it is a bit soft.
I have spoken to the vets 3 times over the last few days and they have assured me that he will be fine, he is probably just a little sore still and they will see him next week. I asked if I could take him in this morning for a check up because his nose has also starting running a bit and they said there was really no need, they will see him next week etc. Now this is my first dog and normally my vets are fantastic so I trust that they know best but I am really worried about my dog! He is normally an extremely crazy, bouncy 10 month old springer spaniel, seeing him hardly move is quite worrying, I know he has had a big operation but that was a week ago and he has got worse rather than better.
I was thinking about phoning another vets tomorrow and seeing what they say, any advice? (please!)

My dog was also very sorry for herself after being spayed. Have you got enough pain relief onboard?I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
The vets said he didn't need any, should I be giving him some?! God, I feel terribleSlimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

He did have a post op check on Monday but they want to see him again next week. I am quite happy to pay another vets if he does need to go, I am quite happy to pay my own vets if they would actually see him! They just seemed like I was getting on their nerves more than anything.Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

Just insist that you want him seen. They cant refuse you an appointment surely? You'll have to pay the consult fee though of course. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

some dogs do calm down after that op.
and yes probably feeling very confused and still a bit sore as his important bits are missing.
Have you given him any chicken and rice, soft and gentle on the stomach.
Dont forget dogs are great sulkers
I think he is just sulking! He eventually ate his breakfast this morning. He has had some chicken and rice which he loves, I might get him some more today, perhaps it will cheer him up :rotfl:.
Another week and he will be able to have a run around off lead, I think that will definitely cheer him up. Thanks everyone!Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0 -
Hi - hope he is continuing to do better. My old boy (10) was castrated on Wednesday - he has a prostate problem and this should calm it down hopefully.
My vets sent him home with a bottle of Meloxidyl liquid pain reliever. A friend who had her young dog done last week at a different vet was given the same medication - odd how vets differ.
I would say that if you are still unhappy with the way your worries are handled by your current vet then look at changing practice - find someone else before you need to see them again. Ask other dog owners who they use and visit practices to get a feel for them.
Good luck!0 -
Strangely, the people down the road also had a springer who had problems after neutering. With him, they made the vet come out to a home visit and the dog was taken back to be kept under observation. I believe the area had become infected.0

Our Llhasa Apso had to be neutered in December and alos needed an op on his tail. He was a very sorry little dog for about a month. He was on pain relief but we ended up at the vet at 9pm one Sunday evening and were given extra pain killers. He is now back to his usual self but with an increased appetite.0
