Selling car on Ebay

Hi All, would appreciate some tips for my daughter who is planning to list her Golf for sale on Ebay.
The main areas I am unsure about are the test drive and payment. Is it up to the intending buyer to make sure they have insurance to drive the Golf, even if it is just round the block? If someone decides to buy the car how long will it take to get notification say if it is through Paypal? to be sure we have received the payment?
Any other tips on achieving a safe sale would be appreciated.
Many thanks

    Cash only.
    Don't accept Paypal.

It is up to the seller to ensure that anyone test driving it has insurance. Until it is paid for, the seller is responsible and if the tester is caught without insurance, the seller would be done too. Once its paid for it is no longer theirs and they don't need to worry.

Paypal notify the instant the payment is made however I would insist on cash or bank transfer - Paypal payments can be reversed.
  • Definitely cash only. It's much safer, plus you'll be charged a fee for using PayPal, and has been said above, the payment can be reversed.

If the intended buyer can't prove they're insured, then they shouldn't be allowed to drive. You/your daughter will have to drive and they can sit in the passenger seat/back. Ask them to show you their driving licence and compare it to the insurance certificate. They should provide a certificate, not a schedule!

Other tips for a safe sale:

Don't allow the buyer to test drive on their own, even if they give you their mobile phone/jewellery as security.

Don't leave the buyer unattended with the keys .

Count the cash in front of them to make sure it's all there.

Give them a receipt for the sale, and ask them to sign a "goods received" note for you, stating the time and date the vehicle was sold. That way, if they go through a speed camera on the way home, you've got proof that the vehicle was not in your possession at the time.

Fill in the V5 document at the time of the sale and post it off YOURSELF. Only give the buyer the green bit.

If a buyer has insurance already the test drive will only be 3rd party cover, So if they crash it
they wont buy it and you have a damaged car to repair.

You may get lucky and the insurance will agree they were not at fault and the other persons insurance
will fix the car. But may take time.

I have sold 5 or 6 cars on eBay and no one has ever taken a test drive, and the eventual buyer has never been to see the car before bidding and therefore buying.

    As said only accept cash.

You've never sold one to me then,:), I wouldn't dream of handing over cash, (which it has to be OP), without a test drive to prove all is as described.

And as said it is your car and if you do not ensure they prove their insurance not only can your car be written off, you are also guilty of allowing the car to be driven without insurance. All in all a load of trouble you don't need;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Obviously you would take this test drive BEFORE bidding wouldnt you?

I never hand over the cash before a test drive. I'm buying, but only if it's a runner as described.

Fair enough, I can see both sides. If it was significantly not as described, thats fair enough, its just when people have different levels of expectation, and decide to withhold payment. For example if the seller put 'good bodywork for a ten year old car' and the winning bidder did not view the car, then turned up expecting a gleaming example.
