I bought my car off Ebay 3 and a half years ago now. I purposely picked a car that was within budget (£500) and within 5 miles of my home, so I could take a look at the car first before bidding.

At the end of the auction, I paid with cash...easier because the car was literally just around the corner and I could get to it quicker than making the transaction on paypal!

£461 it cost me and it is still going strong all this time later.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Nothing to stop you doing that before placing a bid.;)

Unfortunately there is, lets call it distance or economy.

If the car is fine then one trip to test then pay for the car is all thats neccessary.

Why waste time/money viewing a car at distance that eventually sells for more than you would pay.

None of what I've said breaches ebay rules, you have a right if you are paying outside the insurance of paypal to satisfy yourself the vehicle is as described.

Lets take it to the extreme.

Does buying on ebay mean you pay the price and take away the car?

If it does, do you have the right to even start the car before you pay?

Can you sit in the car and select gears, press the brake pedal, try all the electrics etc etc.

And if it has been described as a good runner, you have every right to have that proven, unless you are a total idiot.

    So imagine this. Next post on this forum;

    Bought a car from ebay,
    wouldn't start,
    nothing works,
seller won't give me my cash back.

Any guess as to what the advice would have been?
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Unfortunately there is, lets call it distance or economy.

So you buy a car that isn't too far away from your home, view/test the vehicle and then bid if it is what you require.

If you don't like the terms of eBay, simple, buy elsewhere.

Nothing in ebays terms are being "disliked", but if you don't use paypal they simply won't want to know.

    Putting my point in a nutshell;

Would you like to have the argument about the condition of the car when you still had the money in your pocket or when some chancer had his greedy paws on it.

And no, I would never buy a car off ebay, inspite of many genuine sellers, it's too dam risky. End of from me.;)

The situation would not arise, I would view and test the vehicle, if it was as described and what I wanted, I would go home and place my bid.

TBH, it isn't too difficult to sort out the wheat from the chaff on eBay.;)

At the end of the day, that's your choice then.

You can go and look at 5 or 10 cars, decide which ones you bid on, and either pay too much, or get out bid, or you can make a serious bid, and drive home a good car, or keep your money in your pocket if it's a lemon.

(I would love you as a customer though. You arrive, big stack of twenties changes hands, I give you the keys, tell you the cars in the lock up two streets away, put the lock on the door, and draw the blinds.)

Now you are just being silly, do you honestly think that would happen?

It is all hypothetical anyway, because I wouldn't buy a car from an eBay auction.

I would, I have, and sold on ebay as well. It's fine if you accept it's online advertising, and reaches millions.
It's no different to any other way of buying a car, apart from the fact you know what you're paying, and the car will still be there when you arrive.

Same here bought & sold loads of vehicles on ebay....

Selling I'll list it and tell it exactly as it is and add loads of photos using the html bit via photobucket to save the fees... ... nothing to hide the car/van/truck is what it is.... Although I know many will blag and hide as much as possible... All mine have been sold blind and the buyers have all done the transaction without a quibble.... I only deal in notes aswell... No Paypal/Cheque Bankers draft..

Test drive inspection is openly offered aswell... Test drives are with the full asking price in my mits before hand and their own insurance...

Buying... I'll ask more more pics and any questions that need answering.... I've bought 4 blind in the last 12months and all have been as described bar one... Ex farm 4wd that had acres of mud inside, afternoons graft and it was right...

End of the day if the car bid upon and won turned out to be a pig of a thing and totally as undescribed whats the worst that can happen?... Bad feedback?... Hardly end of the world stuff.. I think if you do your homework know whats what with what your bidding upon, then you can easily work out whether to go for it or not...

I agree, for me the risks outweigh the benefits.

I'd sooner go to a proper motor auction. You can view dozens of potential purchases under one single roof and in one journey.

A phone call is all that's needed to see what's on offer on the day.
