steve1980 I don't know why you think it so disgraceful to charge.
Everything in life has to be paid for.My kids activities are held in school halls etc and they have to pay for them.Even those that are not run as a business still have to cover costs of staff, premises and insurance etc.

We are in Turkey but wonder if anyone has any ideas for prises and sponsorships--we are an English school that has a music and drama school running--we have 200 students of our own but will open it up to anyone for the talent competition--we can get access to local tv stations and have professional producers--also we have celebrity judges lined up--we will charge a small fee to each act to cover the theatre hire!--any inginious british ideas???we need to stand out to promote further growth of the business

Please tell me that you personally are not responsible for teaching the English language to these children.

The OP asked for ideas on an open forum, steve1980 gave his opinion which I happen to agree with considering you say your business is turning over hundreds of thousands pounds a year. There is no need for the OP and almostcheerful to be so rude and include nasty, childish name calling. Neither of you are covering yourself in glory in this thread.

How about a prize to record a pop video?

A genuine ipod or ipad (as opposed to a Turkish 'genuine' fake)? My experience of Turkish teenagers is that they're inundated with fakes due to the (lack of) Turkish copyright laws and love to own the genuine article.

    Ditto genuine Levis.

I know someone who enters talent shows over here. Generally there are early rounds to qualify for the 'final' and these are free to enter. You have to get down to the last 25 or so who actually do have some sort of talent! Even then half of them are pretty dire, if you didn't have any qualifying rounds then the main event will be utter torture. Think about how many you can fit into the final. At the comps here everyone gets to do three songs. With 25 competitors, then you've got an interval, intro and a couple of non-competing acts for entertainment, the whole thing takes about 5 hours as it is. You may want to give them only, say, 5 minutes each. If you have a drama school then it won't be fair to restrict it just to music, you'll have to let them do what they want.

Anyway, then once they've got the finalists, there still isn't an entry fee as such but they have to buy and re-sell X many tickets to the final.

Frankly no-one but the nearest and dearest of the contestants ever comes to these things, so that's how you cover your costs/make your money, by selling tickets to their families. Example if you gave each kid 5 minutes, so you had 50 kids, and each kid had to sell 10 tickets at £5 you'd get £2500. i can't see that covering everything if it includes those prizes.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
