That's a really good idea having a night off. My dh takes a cooked meal to work, and I cook at home for myself and the kids. He works 3 days on, 3 days off, so my 'day off' is his 3rd day at work, when I don't have to cook for him for the next day, and just do pasta , or fish fingers, noodles, whatever the kids like.
Occasionally, dh brings home a take away. Maybe once every month or two, so that is a real treat.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Yep! I pick up a whoopsied pizza once in a while for when I am either going to be pushed for time, or too lazy!
Or, I will buy a packet of smoked salmon trimmings (87p) and a pack of soft cheese (47p) and stir them in to hot drained pasta, really quick, really easy and really cheap!0 -
A few suggestions:-
1) Make double of whatever one-pot healthy meal you have created on a normal night (Shepherd's Pie, Chilli, Spag Bol etc) and freeze the surplus so that one day you just have to take it out of the freezer and pop in the oven or microwave.
Solves the 'can't be bothered to cook' issue
2) Have a healthy fast food evening for the whole family. We regularly have 'burger night' - healthy burgers in a home made bun served with Spray Oil chips and salad, 'fish & chips' homemade fish fillets coated in flour, egg and breadcrumbs, served with Spray Oil chips and peas, 'chicken dippers' - chicken which has received the home made KFC style treatment.
Solves the craving for fast food, but is still healthy (must be if I can do it within Weight Watchers points).
3) A combination of the above - make a double batch of home-made pizza, chicken dippers etc and then you just have to make the spray oil chips to go with them for a real fast food experience for minimal effort.
I love doing the above - especially as we have a if you cook, you don't wash-up rule in our house, and I feel quite guilty about shoving a 'ready meal' in the oven and sitting back while OH washes up, although there is less washing up too I suppose.0 -
Sometimes you need to slow down and connect with your food - prepare it with love, feel the texture in your hands as you create something, and then share it with your loved ones. Other times, you just need to slap it under the grill and not care.
Last week I made a cottage pie, ragu sauce for pasta, chicken curries and baked spuds. Last night I had chicken fried rice from the local chinese. Next week, I'll cook again!

Hi
Must admit I bought some chips last week as I got home a bit late. Had them with some home-made baked beans. It's not something I'll do often but the chips were good.
Will make sure I've got enough bread/rolls in the freezer.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -

What's wrong with oven chips? That can still be part of a good meal and they aren't expensive to buy. Oven chips once a week won't kill anyone. We love bacon egg and chips type meals once a week or so. Or I use oven chips to serve with chicken drumsticks etc...o/s is to save money, to enjoy good home-made food etc, but it's not supposed to make you a martyr to the kitchen.
Since I've been making most things from scratch though, whenever I get a ready meal instead I'm usually disappointed. You have to go for the real 'premium' ranges to get anything that's nice. Used to like most ready meals, but not any more.
I'm also on first name terms with the local chinese/chippy as we get dinner once or twice a month from there. Life's too short to slave away every evening.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I agree which is part of why eating seasonally is so good. we'll soon ease off the winter stuff and it will be missed, because you know that you won't be having it till late next autumn. But good things coming soon. This is the worst time of year.....too cold to eat salad...0 -
I have Fridays off cooking. A meal that goes 'ping' does the trick! M&S Curry tonight. Only the two of us on Fridays, so not too costly! :T0

I'm lucky in that I eat out quite a lot so I enjoy cooking at home. Fortunately only for me and an unfussy DH so that's not too difficult. Also I only do meals not baking (I enjoy bread and cakes far too much for that:rotfl:)
I would say balance out your meal plan into proper cooking and lazy/easy. In the latter I always include things like pasta with a HM sauce from the freezer.
Just wanted to ask OP why her OH doesn't cook one of his oven chip specialities when she's not at work, then everyone's happy!0
