Can I ask how old your son is? Age could be one of the factors why they were being so cagey.

The other question I have to ask, were you there? If you were, how did he speak to them? if you weren't, how did he describe how he spoke to them, and do you believe him?

The right attitude and tone of voice, can make all the difference between someone bending a rule slightly and some sticking to every rule in the book and possibly finding a few extra to boot.

To be fair to op, if I had lost my card and I had ID, passport etc to prove that I am the account holder then I would expect to be able to walk in to a branch and withdraw money..........
If I were refused this I would demand the closure of the account with x amount in cash and x amount in cheque, walk across the road and open another account with a different bank

There is a serious flaw in this "cunning plan" - can anyone else see it ? :rotfl::rotfl:

    .

Old enough to have a job and have his name on utility bills (which I assumed meant that he does not live with his parents anymore), according to the OP.

Santander are useless but if you can't look after your bank card after losing it several times in a year, then you should not really be trusted to have one.

but that doesnt mean they shouldnt let him have access to his money if he can verify ID. If he has enough id to open an account he should have enough id to withdraw money from his account, card or no card....the fact that he has lost his card a number of times is not relevant to the refusal to allow him to withdraw money....they could say...heres your money but we wont be giving you a new card....
in any respects phone banking/internet transfer to a trusted account who can give you cash would solve the problem now

as for flaws in previous post....Im not sure what that is...would it be they would refuse? please explain....it is entirely possible a bank clerk would refuse to allow a withdrawl but allow a closure..different processes, there was a recent post on another thread about counter withdrawls and I have seen this done myself
person- I would like to withdraw £25 please....
counter clerk-- all withdralws under £30 need to be made via atm, is there anything else I can help you with
person- yes, I would like to withdraw £31 please
counter clerk- certainly sir, here you are, anything else I can help you with
person- yes, I would like to deposit £6 please.....

Systems are set in place, bank staff will usually follow these to the letter, if op had asked to close account and had sufficent ID (a different process would be followed) I dont see how bank could refuse and they will usually allow a cash withdrawl to a set amount. Apology if this is not what you meant moonrakerz

Bank customers are not obliged to follow the processes that banks put in place for their own convenience.

Bang on Voyager2002. It's about time the British Public stepped up to the plate. That's why we have them taking all the tax money.

not to be cynical, but... I would wonder whether he's been declaring the card lost/stolen in order to dispute payments he'd made on the card.

    You cannot make that statement

Did he actually report the card lost? or did he just go in and say he cant find the card, its at home somewhere, but he hasn't got it with him and needs to draw money out?
The amount of customers I have experienced doing this, bring all valid correct ID, but just saying the card is at home somewhere and want money out. Some banks/BS have strict rules that if you dont have your card, you cannot withdraw.
The only way to do it is if the card is stopped, reported lost/stolen and then only 1 emergency withdrawal is allowed (usually restricted amounts like up to £500)

I agree he does sound rather careless and should be more responsible for his cards. Maybe he had lost so many, the bank said there would be a charge to replace it and he refused to pay? This I can understand why they would refuse to give him his money.

Other than that it sounds like we may have not had the whole story. Why would they make him wait 1 hour? what where they doing? Was his ID not valid/in date? Did the address of the utility bill not match their records? And how he managed to walk out without someone giving him a reason as to why he could not withdraw is beyond me. They must have had a vaild reason.
I have heard lots of bad things happening with Santander, but I honestly cant imagine him waiting an hour and no staff members could say why.
If that were me, I wouldnt leave without a reason. They must have said they cant do it because......
Not just they cant withdraw. "There is no reason sir, but I just cannot allow you to take your money out."

I agree with this. There must have been a valid explanation. Maybe his account was restricted and had a fraud flag against it? That maybe why they told him he had to call the number first, before they could help.
I do agree that they must have given him a valid reason. Does he not have internet banking? If he does then can't he transfer some money to another account and withdraw from that?

To me, it seemed somewhat unlikely that a bank which wouldn't let you withdraw (say) £50, would then let you withdraw everything in that account with the same (lack of ?) ID available :D

He is 25. He works as a builder and take his card with him every day to be able to buy some lunch and snacks but as he moves a lot during the day,for all i know the card could be encased in cement :)
I agree, he has been a bit careless loosing his card like that so many times. But everytime he reported it over the phone straight away.
They told him they were gonna send a new one but he couldn't wait as he needs to eat.
No i was not with him but i believe him,he is a very polite young man and hardly gets angry.
I'd like to thank everyone for the replies.
Since then,he found a friend who can lend him money while he waits for his card.
I have advised him to take care of the next card coming soon i hope.
