Rates are always changing, depends when in the month you quoted etc
  • An update.....the car insurance world is definitely screwed up....

Got quotes from at least 5 comparison sites and tried a couple of insurers directly - cheapest quotes were still around £320 for TPFT but most were coming in around £400-500. My original quote for £212 had expired within 7 days so I couldn't go back to that!

Anyway, eventually settled on Fully Comp for £292. Why is this cheaper than TPFT? Also, it was impossible to get Third Party Only cheaper than TPFT for any insurer - quite bizarre! I didn't want/need Fully Comp as the car is old and the trade value is low, meaning that I will never actually claim off of the insurance as it would be written off for even a small claim. Plus the excess would be higher than the trade value so I only really need to cover a third party.

Villabadger: I had the same problem as you with an expired quote (had a quote for £1,200 one week, then £1,800 the next). Have a look in your email inbox to see if the insurer emailed you a copy of the quote with a reference number. Mine sent me one for the 'cheaper' quote, which expired, but after ringing them up to pay for it, they were happy to take the quote ref. Give it a go.

Because not all companies offer TPFT so when you quote for that you reduce your search and the competition.

    Try a high excess.
You will never claim so it won't apply but might bring your quote down.

As for quotes -as others have said - keep the email, they are usually valid for a while.

our van insurance was up for renewal last week & went on all comparison sites, last year we went through Admiral & insurace was Aveva, it cost just over £800 for our 3 year old LWB transit, when got new quotes they were through the roof, i called Admiral direct as their renewal was £1,155, when the guy went through details i had to admit my older son had got two sp30's last year & guy said well it's just gone up another £350 to £1, 465:eek: i said i'll go direct to Aviva & get it cheaper, the guy was'nt bothered, so called Aviva & really nice guy, got me all extra's i did'nt get before & even though older son got 6 points, younger 3 points & only 23 the total cost was £650 fully comp, so was cheaper than last year:j thats a hell of a lot of commission Admiral is on, try going direct

Well thanks for a very enlightening post. Of course it happens to everyone else - did I at any point state that I am being hard done by in isolation? My point is....there appears to be little logic or consistency to how insurance costs are applied. The variation in prices is ridiculous.

Who cares about the variation in prices? You only have to pay ONE price. You're not ranting, you're whinging. There's only one ridiculous thing about this thread. That's the reason you didn't buy the insurance first time around.

Another useful contribution - thank you as well!!! Why are people always out to pick a fight on these forums? By pointing out a quote increased by 50% I was hoping that someone might be better placed to explain that there is a legimate reason for this happening.

Although it seems you already have the answers, the reason I didn't buy the insurance at the time was because I didn't own the car then - but then you knew that anyway.

...and I was supposed to know that how?

If that's your attempt at being sarcastic - massive fail. If you don't offer relevant information then it becomes difficult to help. My guess is that you probably didn't put the same information on the internet the two times you tried.

TPO is generally more expensive than TPFT because the claims experience for TPO policies is worse than TPFT. These days the majority of the comprehensive premium anyone pays goes towards the third party element of their policy.

It's clear you have a bee in your bonnet about insurance. I doubt there's much I could say to you that would appease you.

The bottom line is that you'll have to suck it up and pay the man.
