Rabbit help please

A friend found a rabbit, tried to find owner and phoned rspca to collect him. I said we would have him, we have left him a few days to settle into his hutch and he has been out in his run everyday. Today we started to handle him again and he really is lovely and playful. Well he has something on his foot it's like a red lump i don't think there was any blood but couldn't look very hard as he got a bit distressed with me touching it. Im feeling all abit queasy about it now, he is not insured yet and we haven't registered him with a vet. I'm not sure if this was there when we had him. Are vet bills for rabbits huge? I'm wondering if the RSPCA will help? Any ideas? Thank you for your time Lolly x

Hi. Unfortunately, vet bills for any animals are expensive. Not sure if RSPCA will be able to help, but its worth asking. It could be an abcess that needs draining, but vet needs to look at it. Dont forget if you keep him, he will need to be neutered (which costs around £50) as its unfair to keep him intact as his hormones will be raging and could start spraying and become a bit agressive. also will need his myxi and VHD jabs which are about £16 each and myxi is 6 monthly. Rabbits are an expensive luxury and you dont always feel like you are getting much in return! The best thing you can do for your new bun is to give him the biggest home possible, maybe a shed, have him neutered and get him a neutered female for company, nothing nicer than seeing 2 loved up buns grooming and snuggling together!0

Thank you for you help, I am assuming bun is a he. Im pretty inexperienced at pets. We do need to take "Spike" to the vet/rspca as there is a possibility he/she is already spayed/neutered. We have bought http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Chicken-coop-hen-house-cat-rabbit-ferret-house-run-/180634715461?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item2a0eab0545#ht_1403wt_662 which i guess we could get another into but he is loving it at the moment! I have tried phoning RSPCA and will try again in the morning!DFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Can I just ask why the female needs to be neutered if the male is already?
Thanks0 -

That looks really good and a brilliant price. Was it easy to put together?

Thanks
There is a very high incidence of uterine cancer in female rabbits who are unspayed (up to 80% incidence by the time they are 5 yrs old). Also, they will nest and have very strong urges to do this which can be distressing to the bunny.0 -
The RSPCA, PDSA and The Blue Cross may all be able to help, depending on how close you are to their centres. Enjoy your bunny!0

Hope spike gets on okay - and well done for taking him home. I have two bunnies and I absolutely adore them - they're like an old married couple! If you do get him a girlfriend please check out your local rescue - they should usually neuter and jab the bun for free before you take her and you pay £40 - £50 for the bun, a lot more cost - effective if on a budget.0

Thank you for your advise, Spike has been to the vet. Apparently a oldish wound which has got infected he squeezed the pus out (Gross) and he has some antibiotics. Spike is infact a boy, approx a yr old, perfect teeth and nails and needs to be castrated? Any ideas what benefits this will bring? We are going to look into getting a friend for him xxxDFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

well if you're going to get a second bunny the castration will mean he can have a lady friend
