Only thing I've thought of which hasn't been mentioned is, they may have put the new DVD on the same ribbon as the W7 hd without changing the dvd to "slave". ie you have 2 drives on the same ribbon both set as "master" drives.

As the comp boots can you see all the drives listed on the post (Power-on self-test)? ... or check if all drives show in the bios.

I could be way-off, but just a thought.
