Hi,

Have been looking at holidays and Jamaica is coming in budget, never really looked in to it so was after some advice please.

What areas would you recommend? And can you get out of the resort? Would really appreciate some tips from anybody who has been...

Thanks

    Hi
Ive been to Montego Bay in jamaica in an all inclusive hotel its lovely place but reccomended not to go out of the complex, there is a vast amount of drugs being sold outside complex and the staff at the hotel strongly recomend that u only go out with organised trips. on another note it is a lovely country and there is loads of attractions to visit, and i believe that there is seasons when not to visit because of weather we went in may 2005. hope this helps u out a bit.!!!!!!!!!

    Hi

I've stayed at both Ocho Rios and Negril-both all inclusive. At Ocho Rios I went into town. It was a bit scary at first as you get approached by people trying to sell you drugs or street traders trying to make you buy things. Once you learn to smile and say a polite but firm "no", you soon get left alone. Once we relaxed, it was fine.

I've not been into Negril town but the beaches there are beautiful and very safe to walk.

We went to Montego Bay, stayed at the Rose Hall resort, all inclusive, fantastic water sports, and it has it's own full scale water park (no queues!!)! One of the famous big boxers (can't remember which one!!) got married in the hotel the week before we stayed there!

We did stay in the resort itself as you don't need more than that, the few times we ventured out were on organised trips which were very good too.

One thing for sure, you will not regret going to Jamaica, it is heaven on earth! I remember just laying back on one of the big tyres floating around in the water park thinking it can't get much better than this! Only problem was, I was half asleep and didn't see the waterfall coming! It was not unusual to see people fast asleep while drifting around, and no-one was bothered, you took as long as you liked.

Just one note - this was about 5-6 years ago and it was just in the process of changing hands. If the new owners had any brains they would have kept it exactly the same.

Thanks for the replies everyone, appreciate the advice. I've been looking on tripadvisor and have to say Jamaica looks beautiful. Need to look more into which area we would like to go to...
  • I hope wherever you go in Jamaica, you have a lovely time. My parents are Jamaican, and I've been there 3 times to visit other family members. It's a beautiful country, just watch out for over-eager market traders, and stock up on a good insect repellent. (The last 2 times we went, mum and I almost had our legs eaten by mosquitoes-not nice!:( My brother and niece were fine!)

If your happy to travel 1,000s of miles to never leave the hotel them it will be OK.
If like me you like to explore then it really is not a good destination.
I would not advise walking around Kingston.
Have you considered Barbados? A bit more peacefull there.

The smaller islands are less comercialised, beautiful and often safer.

    I'd recommend Grenada.

Ocho Rios is beautiful! We've been twice, once when I was 9 and again when I was 21.

It's beautiful, and we traveled around lots. We even met up with a few locals for a bbq, very good food and reggea music until the early hours of the morning. Yes there were drugs but we weren't offered any or made to feel that we had to partake. We had a few beers and food and met some amazing people. This happened a few times over the fortnight. Yes keep your wits about you, but there isn't a need for the scaremongering that travel companies go through just to make you buy thier tours and spend money in thier hotels!

Go and you wont regret it.
