Sandals in Negril was very good(but not cheap). The guards for the complex threw a hissy fit if you wanted to walk outside the complex and waxed lyrical about the dangers. Walking along the beach seemed problem free and we were content to be lazy apart from the odd organised trip. Worth checking the climate data for the time you want to go quite carefully.
  • There is a lot of scaremongering from those big all inclusive hotels, it means you miss some of the best bits of Jamaica. Of course, exercise caution the same that you would anywhere else, but the best bit of Jamaica is outside of the resorts. If you are just going to stay on the beach there must be cheaper places you could go...

I guess it is slightly different for me because I look Jamaican so haven't been hassled in quite the same way but I went with a white friend and although people did sometimes approach us it was never uncomfortable. You are not going to be walking around Tivoli Gardens or anywhere else dangerous. Unfortunately Jamaica does have a crime problem which takes away from its beauty (and the food!), but this is centered around poverty and Jamaican people, not tourists.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I am looking to go to either Montego Bay or Ocho Rios...unsure which one yet, going to wait and see where we get the best deal for. I will definitely be venturing out of the hotel, we really do not want to go all that way to sit in a nice hotel, i'd rather just go to Europe.

Looking at going in May, I've had a look at rainfall and it looks ok, apparently it rains for around 15-20 minutes..has anyone been in May that can tell me if this is correct?

A travel agent has recommended we wait and book around 3 weeks before travelling to get the best deal
