I just have to vent.
I was driving along listening to our local radio station this morning and what I heard made me so angry.
A Primary headteacher was talking about copper being stolen from the school roof.4 times the thieves came back in the space of a week. The school had to close for a day because the ceiling was damaged and dangerous.
Every time something like this happens the school has to pay £500 excess which comes from the school funds, depriving the children of equipment etc.
They are now having to consider having a security guard at night.
This is the bit that really gets me. Because the thieves have made the roof dangerous, the school now has to put up signs everywhere telling people not to go on the roof in case the thieves come back and hurt themselves in the process. If they do they can sue the school.!!!
It just depresses me so much how those that break the law are so protected.

Headmaster or not, it could well be an urban myth. My local police put an easily disprovable by snopes hoax email on their website. Just because you have a responsible job doesn't make you infallible0

I don't think they children would loose out on equipment though, surely the school's insurance would have forked out for it to be fixed??? Would it??? I could be mistaken.
What some people do though! Such a low-life to steal! But to steal and endanger the children and teachers by making the roof unsafe is worse!
I remember someone sueing a homeowner because he (a THIEF) cut himselve on glass while breaking the window to gain access. Grrrrrrrrr:beer: Thank you to everyone!

The OP says its £500 excess, so the insurance pays the rest but the school has to fork out the 1st 500!Wins 2015:-

Hopefully the thieves will fall off the roof and die. That would make me LOL.0

Urban myth.
I've heard a few people suggest that if negligence can be proven then the landowner could be liable. I have no idea what would constitute "negligence", however.
There are plenty of sharp railings around, and they haven't been removed to prevent negligence claims, but according to one news article (see link below), "police admit burglers could sue householders".
I wonder if it's because of the current paranoia over "health & safety" and because most people (such as headteachers and the police) don't really understand the law and so err (too far) on the side of caution. It would be interesting to get the opinions of a lawyer specialising in negligence claims...

The stealing of copper is a real problem in the area. A few times, the trains to London have been disrupted by thieves stealing copper power cables from the train tracks.
