Hi All,
My wife had some spotting over the weekend and she is worried that she might miscarry.
I was wondering what the HCG levels should be at 5 weeks?
She had a blood test yesterday and it was 15,000
They might do a scan this week

I would suggest to call a doctor and share your concerns - ask what is the expected level.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

they usually do 2 tests at 48 hour intervals as the level should double in 48 hours.
Other than that.. a bit of spotting is not much to fret about and is in fact very very normal at about the time the period would have been due.. (again at 6 and 10-12 weeks).. and sadly if she is going to miscarry she will, there is nothing anyone can do about it and at this stage it usually means something is wrong with the embryo.
Most places won't scan until at least 6 weeks.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Please don't worry, seek medical advice instead. Pigpen is spot on and worrying unnecessarily will just stoke your anxiety.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I have had 3 pregnancies. The two that went to term I had light spotting with both at around the 5 week mark. It was brown blood rather than red and only light spotting. If it is very light it can just be old blood leaving her system. It can also be where the egg is inbedding in the womb.
Im not sure what the hcg levels should be. I do know that they get higher and higher in the first few weeks. The easiest way to check if all is okay is to do a preg test. If the result line is really dark then that shows that the pregancy is progressing as it should be. If the result line is pale then things may not be going right.
The pregnancy I lost I started with a tiny bit of spotting, but within hours it had got very heavy. The preg test I did also was very pale, whereas when I had tested initially it had been a dark line.
With my first pregnancy I booked in for an early scan with bupa at 6 weeks. They found baby which looked like a kidney bean and could clearly see a little heartbeat pumping away. I still have that scan photo and when he is driving me mad and giving me lip I look at it and it keeps me sane.
I really hope all will be okay0 -
There are no set HCG levels as long as they double every 48 hrs it is as normal. I wouldn't worry unnecessarily but call a doctor if you feel you must. Congratulations!!0

In the nicest possible way, it's probably not best for you to try and second guess anything, although i'm sure you can't do anything but. Even if the worst had happened doesn't it take a while for the levels to decrease?
I bled in my second pregnancy. Once at 13 weeks and once at 14 weeks. I went to th ehospital the first time and they just told me 'what will be will be' - didn't even scan me. I went back to the gp though and he called up for me to have a scan for my own peace of mind. My DD2 will be 2 years old in a few weeks so I was lucky that the bleeding didn't progress.
If it helps, and you can afford it why not book a private scan for next week if poss. If not, go to your gp tomorrow with your OH and see if you can get in for a scan at your local hospital.0 -
After having three children, during my forth pregnancy I continued to have normal periods for three months. I had no idea I was pregnant untill I missed a period and was stunned to find out I was nearly four months gone! So dont worry, bleeding early on dosent have to mean there is a problem. Congrats! x0

Try not to drive yourself mad. Spotting can be perfectly normal. Some women bleed all through pregnancy. But for others, it means a miscarriage. Of my three pregnancies, the two in which I had early spotting were the two that ended in miscarriage. I did bleed with my live pregnancy but not till much later on.
Don;t do tests and look for dark lines or light lines - it won;t help and will only aggravate the anxiety.
I know it is so hard, I only miscarried last week, so I'm fresh from the agonies, but all you can do is wait and see. Nothing you do or don;t do will change the outcome, the baby is either OK or it isn't.
As people have said, HCG levels should double in 48 hours, and scans usually don;t get given till 6 weeks. Even then it may be inconclusive if a heartbeat can;t be seen. And even if you do get a heartbeat, that doesn;t mean everything will be OK, sadly. The first trimester is a real trial in my opinion.

Rather than tell you not to worry and that it's probably nothing (none of us can tell whether it is ir not) I'd say there's nothing the medical profession can do to change the outcome either way so try to stay calm, eat healthily, follow the guidelines the clinic gave you...and time will tell. It's a horrible place to be - been there, done that unfortunately.

It's not the level that matters, it's the rate it rises at (double in 48 hours basically).
Pregnancy tests don't help - my last miscarriage I was getting darker and darker lines... but the pregnancy had died and it was just a missed miscarriage.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0
