Perhaps try opening a current account with them in branch. If accepted you could get a credit card automatically offered too.
I can vouch for this. I have a bad credit history (1, small old default) and couldn't get decent credit cards. Got a joint account with Halifax and on the online banking they guaranteed me the Clarity card. I was accepted with a £500 credit limit (but perfect for me to build up credit history/used abroad).
My partner has good credit history but was declined a Virgin credit card due to Experian messing up our credit reports due to address problems. Virgin declined again after sorting this all out, but Halifax offered him a guaranteed card with 0% on BT's or purchases for 13 months, so he's taken that instead.0
