Can't say if the overall costs is OK or not.

But please watch out for the one-way drop off charges for picking up the car in Detroit and leaving it in New York. The table below is from NetFlights to give you a guide - for your trip it's US$300 plus taxes . The one way fees have to be paid locally and are probaly NOT included in the price you'll be quoted by anyone.

One way rental pricing and information
    Distance............. Applicable One Way Fee
    0 to 200 miles....... US$50.00 + local taxes
    201 to 500 miles .....US$100.00 + local taxes
    501 to 1000 miles.... US$300.00 + local taxes
    Over 1000 miles ......US$500.00 + local taxes

    Hi there,

Might be a good idea to try a website that compares prices across all the main suppliers like Avis and Hertz etc, then you can make sure you get the best price and deal. Try https://www.anyairportcarhire.com I have used them in the past and got a good price.

    Cheers

if helps at all, I think that one way mileage charges are calculated 'as the crow flies', not by a route map.
For the OP this could make a huge difference.
The distance by road is approx 615 mile and would drop into the $300 + local taxes category, but the 'as the crow flies' figure from Detroit airport to La Guardia is 499.16 miles which comes under the $100 + local taxes category. Soooooooooooo, before you collect your hire car, check the zip code of the hirers depot and the zip code of the drop off point and MAKE SURE that they come under the 500 mile limit.

I'll try and find a definitive link regarding how one way mileage is calculated.

As the crow flies miles can be calulated from here.
