My GF (whose a midwife of many years) recommends firstly that you ensure that the baby is fixed on the breast properly i.e. feeding correctly. Secondly she swears by "Lansinoh". Hope that helps.
Trying hard to be a good moneysaver.
  • AnnieZC, I would point out that the site you have given the link to is Canadian, and is called Annie's...and this is the second post today where you've given this link...
Just trying to help! :) I know I didn't need a big tube, just a small one was plenty.

Wondering how it was all going??? If you need any of the Lansinoh Pm me as I have found some out.

Midwife did give me a sample which lasted a few days but I just had to send the man out to get more. Amazing stuff works wonders.

Went through the shields and stuff with my first two but this stuff was by far the best.

    Hope all is going well.

The thing that worked best for me was to express a bit of milk at the end of each feed (at first you'll get a few drops only but persevere). Freeze it and use it to give by bottle every so often (at which point you can then express a full feed). Not only did this give my nips a rest it also allowed hubby granny etc to have a shot of feeding. Baby then becomes used to a bottle teat and gives you more options.
  • Another vote here for nothing at all. Keep them clean and dry, devote enough time to feeding and you should be fine. Know that babies lose weight in the first week and that "real milk" will not come in for a couple of days. Make sure you post when she arrives.
  • I would agree with Inkie the Midwife that air and your own milk rubbed in are the best and cheapest treatment for sore nipples, provided there is no thrush involved. however I foud my nipples did get very sore the first week of feeding despite perfect attachment( used to be a MW myself but not wholly up to date now) and I asked our BF expert at University of Central Lancs who said that the stretching of ligaments under the skin could cause pain but not sores or cracks inthe first week. And it WAS sore. Good luck with your baby but beware there are plenty of better things to spend your money on than expensive nipple creams with no proven benefits.
