As others have said, hopefully you will not need it at all - I didn't. :)

Apart from that, I too have heard that Lahsinoh cream is the best and you can get it on prescription. (Incidentally, Lansinoh breast pads are the best too, but very pricey!)

I can really recommend the Lansinoh nipple cream. I know it's expensive, but its a small price to pay for relief of the pain of sore nipples! You're not forced to have a problem, I was ok with first baby but second took a bit of time to get his technique refined! I was given Kamillosan in hospital but I found it messy and it didn't work. Also was advised to wash it off before feeding baby and washing makes you more sore! I rang my Doctor to see if she would presccribe Lansinoh but she hadn't heard of it! She also said it was too expensive when I gave her the details. Rather short sighted I think. They are always going on about benefits of breastfeeding but won't prescribe something which would help. I was all set to give up but with help of the lansinoh and a good midwife kept up and am still feeding baby 5 months later.

PS you will be advised against nipple shields, think because it inhibits the milk supply or something.

Some midwives/hv's will refuse to prescribe it, mine did as they said it was better without! However,it was everything possible to help or stop BF (I sobbed through every feed for 11 dyas until I got breast sheilds which I used for 2 further weeks agaisnt HV advice as it would "stop my flow" and went on to sucessfully BF for another 8 months) so I bought my own. Tried several brands, Kamillosan was by far the best for me, doesn't hurt to get a tube as it is also great for nappy rash so every chance you will use it at some point.

    Good luck;)

  • I was given a tube of Avent nipple cream by a friend who bought it and then decided to bottle feed. Seven months later, I'm still breastfeeding a couple of times a day and I'm sure I wouldn't have persevered without the cream to soothe my poor nipples in the first few weeks. I've still got most of the tube left as you only need a tiny bit, but it does come in useful for sore bums too!

Don't buy anything now - you probably won't need either. !

    I didn't need it either.

Also expessing some milk and leaving it to dry on your nipples helps if there sore/cracked!
  • It was 5 years ago now but I am pretty sure I used a herbal cream called Calendula which worked a treat. Also rubbing my own milk in after and letting the air get to the nipple after works too.

Hello! I breast fed my first for 10 months, and despite best efforts to get him latched on properly, I did occasionally get sore. My midwife recommended rubbing a little bit of milk in too, and I think this did help.

Also, sounds like an old wives tale, but cabbage leaves (the darker green the better), one leaf in each bra cup (if you buy one of those round, compact cabbages the leaves are already breast-shaped lol), are amazing for soothing the soreness. I laughed my head off when I first heard this, but soon stopped laughing when I tried it - the results were great. You get an instant cooling feeling, which is great for that horrible burning sensation, and then something in the leaves encourages the tissue to repair itself.
