Seems a big problem with applying to the AHRC is the fact that you do not know whether you are going to get any funding until late August/early September which, when you are hoping to go back to university shortly after this time, is a real pain. You are just sort of up in the air awaiting their decision and can't make any definite plans until they decide to let you know. Surely there must be a better system!
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

Yes, this is a worry of mine too. My course actually starts on Sept 2nd (I have a residential week then as the course is distance learning), so even if I did get the funding I would have to fund the most expensive part of the year myself and then get the money back! I imagine it will be a very nerve-wracking time as I can only really do the course if I can get the funding, and I will also be looking for a new job at that time as my current contract ends at the end of August. It does seem a very odd system, to not know until right that close to the start of your course.

I have spoken to the finance department at the University and they agreed it was very difficult as if you are not accepted for funding, it is too late to apply for a Career Development Loan in time for the start of the course as they take approx. 2 months to process!

I'm just about to begin applying for fundingform the AHRB to fund a phd, which I absoultely could can't do without funding. I agree that the value of the degree varies from uni to uni, I'm hopeful because of the specialist work my department does. I have to admit I'm worried about my proposal though, seems like everything has fallen out of my head since I finished my masters!
  • My 18 year old daughter is having an audition for Guildford Conservatoire. This is for Musical Theatre. It is a private college and if she succeeds she will get a degree but the fees are £10,000 P A ! Any ideas for grants/loans/2nd mortgages etc would be welcome!

I am sorry to hear your predicament. :o If you are not a British citizen then I don't think state-subsidised loans are available, and commercial loans may not be easy to get either. However, your university should have a student support department which will help students in financial difficulty. They will have contingency funds from which they may be able to provide you with a grant or loan. They will also have a much better knowledge of what other sources of help are available to you than anyone on here. :)
  • Thanks.Gizmoleeds.I will look into the information you have given me .So Grateful Thank you.Paulina.
