this does sound almost ideal for what i want. have a telewest box at home so this is fine... the only wondering i have is whether this has an easy pause tv function, although not essential it would be nice to have.
anyone any ideas?0 -
I would love to be able to cancel my Sky+ subscription, but until a replacement PVR can at least match Sky's 'series link' feature (ie record a program & ALL others that follow in the series), then they've got me over a barrel. The whole point of PVRs is convenience & without a 'series link' feature, you're likely to forget to record a lot of episodes....& that ain't convenient!0

I just read in one review that the unit does not have any editing features to remove ad breaks, or to remove extra footage from start or end of the programme, before copying the edited programme from HDD to DVD. So one has to sit there and manually pause the DVD recording, and FF through the ads. Just like a VCR.
This makes the unit completely useless for me.

Don't read to much into that. I have a PVR card on my computer and all it does is allow you to manipulate the program you are watching i.e. Pause, rewind. Other than that its just a TV card, that by the way also takes other input sources.
PVR's have really taken off in the USA. You might have heard of Tivo. Unfortunately they have not over here but the most famous one is Sky+. They are very handy and if you have one you will probably wonder how you ever lived without it.
Ive got a Tivo and love it to bits. Will be sad to see it go when NTL bring out there PVR in January.0 -

You can check out some reviews:

I'm quite interested also.Never say never...0 -
Gawd: do NOT touch them with a bargepole. They're carp. And the "reviews" referred to on eBuyer are generally penned by wannabe writers of pre-pubescent vintage who don't have enough pocket money to even buy a DVD disk, never mind a recorder.
The Mustek doesn't allow editing of recordings and doesn't have the crucial RGB-enabled SCARTS for working with digital terrestrial tuners.
Carp is what they are, and carp is what 90% of the so-called "reviews" on the eBuyer site are.

Thanks for the comments Codger. Would you mind explaining a little more please?
Obviously, for a lowest price entry product there will be some features, such as editing tools which it may not have.
What interests me more, is the comment about scart connectivity.
(a) Are you saying that you cannot plug a Freeview box into it?
(b) Are you also saying that the quality of build and picture / sound is terrible?
(c) Also, do you know of a DVD Recorder with HDD and Disc writing ability (and DivX) for under £100?
I've checked out the forums at www.avforums.com (you mentioned) and found almost nothing about this Mustek DVDR580.

A couple of people have now left reviews on the ebuyer item page which have been positive. Therefore I've just ordered one as a gift.
The postage for 5 day delivery was 50% off at checkout so the price including p+p was £103.51
There's also 1.5% cashback using Quidco, so that brings the real cost to £102 ish. BARGAIN!
Keep smiling, Wilf.Keep smiling!0
