Mobile Phone Insurance

I notice the MSE page is being updated from a few years ago, but while we're waiting for that, does anyone know any good mobile phone insurance policies? Particularly for the iPhone4... :)

Cheers!

do you have personal possessions cover on your house insurance??

mobile phone insurance is very expensive, you will probably pay £15 min a month to insure when it could be covered under your house insurance already.

The likelihood of needing to claim on a phone specific policy is really quite high whereas one does not especially want to claim on a contents insurance policy.

I used to have Orange when cover was included free. I claimed a few times but would never have done so on my own insurance. I'm not surprised Orange dumped this as it must have cost them a fortune.

However in today's digital world, the issue of subrogation will undoubtedly rear its head.

Im in the same boat however I dont have house insurance....
    Help me!
    :o
  • I do have contents insurance but no personal possessions cover.

As mentioned above, I wouldn't want to claim on house insurance - particulalrly as the existing MSE link says that mobile phone insurers dont keep track of claims made or offer a no claims bonus...
  • BUMP! Any suggestions?

90% of the reasons i went with orange was because of the insurance. I don't work for them and i think there service is generally poor.

But one thing i think that stands out about them is they have the best insurance policy of the big 5 mobile companies - don't get me wrong its not completely perfect.

I think in this case it is really a case of better cover being worth the extra money...

If anything goes wrong with your phone its 1 of only 2 of the big five mobile companies that don't send it to get repaired (the other being o2 but for an iPhone they charge £15pm v 12pm for orange), you get a replacement the next day. If its lost or stolen same applies.

Personally i'm prone to damaging my phone in fact in 8 years of being with orange i must have at least used Orange care at least that amount of times.

I begrudge the fact that iPhones carry a premium, on any other phone with orange the care is £6 per month even if the phone costs the same as an iPhone but i get that they are probably higher theft claims etc.

I think £12 per month is a lot of money to insure a phone but if on a phone that would cost you £500 to replace outright its potentially a big saving. Also who wants to claim on a home insurance policy and loose no claims and pay higher premiums.

I've tried finding cheaper insurance but read horror stories about people being without phones for months on end while claims or dragged out, or being offered something other then the phone they have (ie android instead of iPhone) or paying a % of what they now think its worth etc.

For a genuine claim with Orange you call 150 you tell them whats happened and then they arrange to deliver the new one there. The only other gripe i have with it that they don't promise give you a new phone (although i have in the past received brand new ones from them). With the iPhone i'm not so bothered with because apple only authorize themselves to fix their own products and when they refurb a product they are meant to replace anything you can touch.

Bottom line in my opinion its expensive but worth it.

Notafan this is quite an onerous exclusion

Loss, theft or damage to your mobile device where the mobile device was not on your person
or the authorised user’s person at the time of the incident, unless the mobile device was
securely locked away and kept out of sight. Proof of forced entry may be requested to support
    your claim

I think that's pretty standard in any policy for a mobile phone and I think its fair.

Its so people can't say stuff like, ''i left it sat on a table in the pub and when i came back from the bar it had gone''

How many times is your phone not on your person?

The only time mine isn't on my person is when I'm sleeping or its charging. If I'm out and about its with me on my person. If I'm at home and it gets nicked they'll have had to force entry to get it.

I think its common sense not to just leave it for example on full display whilst you aren't with it.

It's a common exclusion on a mobile phone policy but a home insurance policy would not normally contain this type of exclusion.

    Examples of claims.

The phone is in your jacket pocket at work or your trousers when you are asleep and a fire, burst pipe someone stands on it, house broken into etc etc

I'l grant you it's better than most other mobile policies which exclude theft unless force or the threat of force is used so they don't cover pick pockets or deception
