I have no idea if this will work for a stain set in a fabric but...

..my cat Sally hunts, and brings her catch home to eat. One day I noticed a blood stain on some pale coloured matt painted woodwork. Well dried. Well soaked in.

I got out my trusty one part vinegar to three parts water spray and to my surprise a squirt and a single wipe with a sponge cleared it!

So this might be worth a try if all the above don't help.

  • I'd second the recommendation for soaking in cold water. My ds has regular heavy nosebleeds and we've had lots dried into clothes and carpet! With carpet, just dab with cold water, and then blot with a clean cloth.

While I was on holiday in the half term, an ER nurse recommended using Milton for anything really bad, so if cold water doesn't work... We've always had success with cold water and then a normal (40 degree) wash.

    Hope this helps! :)

With it being white a soak in a mild bleach solution plus another wash should work wonders. If all else fails I stick it on the line outside for a few days rain or shine (best combo would be a bit of both). Its amazing how much the weather can clean up stains, then bung it in another wash and sorted.

To be honest once you have tried the gentle approach you know there is a chance it may have to be binned so I go for the big guns then.

    Thank you you're so clever!

And thanks to all for the responses , still got both items soaking in the salt and cold water, will get out the bleach after that, want to go for the cheapest option rather than buying in lots of products (although sure I will probably need them again I am well known for my laundry disasters!)will let you know what happens!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it here, but you can buy Ariel stain remover which is now on money back guarantee till March 31(look for the ones with promotional paper collars), try it on the shirt, and claim money back;)

  • My Mum always swore by washing up liquid, it always got biro and nasty mud stains out! I can't say I've ever had to try it myself on mud but I suggested it to a friend who couldn't get the last muddy marks out of her sons rugby kit and it worked a treat. Pop some on the stain and give it a bit of a rub before chucking it in the wash and voilà! HTH :)

Dissolve about a tablespoon of biological powder in a little hot water in a washing up bowl, top up with cold water, add 1/4 cup of bleach, soak overnight, rinse well and launder as usual.

Hi, just wanted to give an update:

Both items were soaked in salt and cold water, yellow pillow case slight improvement but I'm not really impressed. White shirt no change still massive stain.

Then White shirt soaked in diluted bleach overnight, came back from work and checked and the stain is ALMOST gone!!!!

Think I'll risk leaving it one more night no signs of it disintegrating.

Can anyone suggest whether the yellow pillow case could be soaked in the same solution or ....maybe not.....might go for the milk on that.

If you bleach the yellow pillow case it will bleach colour out. Stain devils do one (sorry can't remember the number) which is specifically for blood. It works v well. Cold water run throgh fabric with tap on quite powerfully to rinse worst off then put stain devil on and leave on the side for 10-30 mins, rub it, rinse in more cold and will be gone. You can buy on amazon with free p&p and well worth keeping in as your daughter suffers nose bleeds. My daughter went through it too although now grown out of them.

    Good luck.
