If you run your browser in sandboxie, yes it will prevent you from infection, it will just infect the sandbox. All you do is termiate programs in the sandboxie and then delete the contents of the sandbox and it is gone. You have to remember that if you download any programs whilst using your browser in sandbox, when it is deleted these go as well, as will any remebered shopping carts etc.

I use it regularly, but you have to be disciplined in using it.

So, what's the best coarse of action to take if the system tools screen pops up?
Are you OK as long as you don't click anything?
Times when I've had similar things pop up I close internet explorer down by means of task manager.
Any advice on this may be helpful in the future.

As soon as you get a pop up message saying you have viruses, just close the computer down, then restart. Use the START BUTTON then Turnoff, windows will close the progs down. Alternatively press and release the power button, this will also close the progs down, and with luck when you restart you should be OK.

If you have gone any further than the first popup you may be too late.

I have included the links below again as some people do not seem to be able to browse the forum, or do a search first for information, - see the number of posts that keep coming.

Try the registration key fix first,
If you clear it with the registration key, then do the Malwarebytes scan, and antivirus scan.

I remember about a year ago I was looking for a recipe on how to make peanut butter bars. Clicked on a link in Google and it took me straight to the fake scanner without any warnings. Powered off the computer but still got infected by Trojan Fake Alert:mad:

But good old Malwarebytes rescued me. When I first came across the fake scanner pages I actually thought it was for a legitimate product but hit ctrl alt delete and got out of it. Was happy with what I was using.

I feel really stupid just now as I have just been duped by this scam. It all happened so quickly, things were flashing up on my screen and shutting everything down apart from the System Tool screens and I really did think it was a legitimate virus as I had been on a torrent earlier and thought I might have picked something up from that. My antivirus has just expired, it was going to be renewed on Tuesday when I get paid.

Now, I have been stripped of £64.24 rather than the $19 that they say they are going to take - it even had the Clydesdale Bank Mastercard securecode section that I had to put in my password so I thought it was real as is that not the whole point of that securecode thing!!

The bank are now saying that they won't give me my money back as I did pay the company, so it is not fraud - even though now that I have checked online I can prove that they don't exist & are using Mastercard Securecard links!

I am now overdrawn and not paid til Tuesday, Bank have also cancelled my card as a precaution so I won't get a new card for 3-5 days which is great right before payday!!

    Barstewards!

    These people need shot.

save yourself an AV renewal cost, and install avast 6 free, and malwarebytes, and start scanning - no guarantee any av will protect you from this in future, they all struggle to keep up with the malware

Ouch! System Tools just hit me, I'd only just gone online and had Gmail and MSE open

Malawarebytes in safemode quickly sorted it. Thanks for all the good advice given on the Techie board :A
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

    I have to agree :o

I'm following the advice you gave sumeet on her hijackthis thread.

After running an updated malawarebytes full scan in normal mode I'll run hijackthis. If I post the log would you have a look at it for me please?

    Thanks
